Abstract:
An Elastic Arc Anatomical Shoulder Pulley System for use in rehabilitation of various shoulder conditions. The device provides a means that a user can employ to produce passive shoulder motion that approximates the normal arc the shoulder describes during active movement. A door unit is included that allows for a convenient attachment site of a pulley. An arc that has elastic properties is routed through a pulley that is located above the user's head. Handles are attached to the elastic arc. The user pulls down on one handle to accomplish upward movement of an injured arm. The arc shape of the elastic arc insures that the movement produced corresponds to the normal arc shaped movement of the shoulder that is produced during active movement.
Abstract:
A uniquely configurated splint designed to effect intrinsic muscle stretching includes a splint base and a splint tower. The splint base is secured to the arm of the person using the same. A palmar arch support is securable to the palm of the user and an end portion of the splint. The end portion of the splint has an upwardly projecting tower to which a finger supporting structure is secured. In use, the proximal and interphalangeal joints of the fingers are maintained in flexion and a force is exerted toward metacarpal phalangeal joint extension. This serves to stretch the intrinsic muscles of the hand. In order to accomplish this without also translating the flexor digitorum profundus tendon anteriorly, a palmar arch support is provided. The tower preferably generally overlies the palmar arch support. An associated method is disclosed.

Apparatus for applying a generally dorsally directed force to the palm of a person's hand includes an upper structural support which is structured to be secured in generally overlying relationship with respect to the dorsal region of the metacarpals. The upper support has a base structured to be in contact with the hand and support for straps. A palmar compression pad is structured to be in contact with the palm of the hand with the strap or straps being placed in tension to thereby resist undesired movement of the flexor tendon and thereby reduce median nerve compression in the carpal tunnel. In a first embodiment the upper support will have a base, a pair of apertured towers secured to the base through which a strap or straps may pass and a suitable structure for fastening the strap or straps to the upper support. The strap or straps will preferably be adjustably and removably securable to regions adjacent the ends of the palmar compression pad. A bridge may be provided between the upper support towers for facilitating securing the strap or straps thereto. In another embodiment of the invention, the bridge and towers are eliminated. The palmar compression pad is generally rigid and has a pair of generally upwardly extending legs through which one or more straps pass with the upper support secured to the strap. The strap is placed in tension in order to provide the desired dorsally directed force to the palm of the user's hand. Related methods are provided.

Abstract:
A portable, adjustable device which provides support, tactile feedback, and mechanical advantage to individuals with weakness, tremors, or poor motor control during the activity of self-feeding. The device consists of a base for attaching the device to various sized tables, a support slide holder and a support slide. During typical operation, once adjustments have been made and tightened down, the user places his or her arm in the bottom portion of the support slide and with support of the support slide, slides the arm toward the mouth until it rests in the top portion of the support slide wherein the user is able to consume a bite of food. The base of the device clamps to various size tables. The support slide is connected to the base through a support slide holder which allows vertical and horizontal adjustment of the support slide. The support slide itself is arced in the horizontal and vertical planes in a fashion that approximates the arc of the arm during non-supported self-feeding. The support slide includes specially shaped segments at the top and bottom for additional control for the user in these areas.
