An object of the present invention is to provide a radio receiver and a method for detecting carrier waves which make it possible to detect carrier waves for an IBOC type hybrid broadcast reliably. A radio receiver for receiving carrier waves for hybrid broadcasts which are arranged so as to be adjacent to and located on both sides of carrier waves for analog broadcasts in frequency bands includes a tuner for tuning to a broadcast frequency, and a controller for setting a center frequency of shift frequency in a range where carrier waves for an analog broadcast can be detected and allowing the tuner to tune to the set shift frequency.

A digital radio broadcast receiver, a radio broadcast receiving unit and a digital radio broadcast receiving system are provided. Character information stored in a memory is displayed as image on a display device when such a condition that a vehicle speed is 0 km/h and a foot brake or a hand brake is on is satisfied, i.e., when a vehicle is halted or parked. Or, the character information stored in the memory is outputted as voice through a voice output device when such a condition that the vehicle speed is 0 km/h and the foot brake or the hand brake is on is not satisfied, i.e., when the vehicle is traveling.

The present invention is directed to the provision of a radio receiver and of a radio receiving method that can reliably detect IBOC hybrid broadcast carrier waves. The radio receiver includes a tuning section for tuning to the frequency of a broadcast carrier wave, a detection section for detecting the signal level of the broadcast carrier wave at the frequency to which the tuning section has tuned, and a control section for detecting an IBOC hybrid broadcast carrier wave, based on a first signal level detected by the detection section by causing the tuning section to tune to a first frequency, a second signal level detected by the detection section by causing the tuning section to tune to a second frequency, and a third signal level detected by the detection section by causing the tuning section to tune to a third frequency. The radio receiving method is implemented in such a radio receiver.

A broadcast receiving apparatus receives digital broadcast and analog broadcast including same broadcast contents simultaneously, and outputs the analog broadcast while the reception state of the digital broadcast worsens, thereby reduces uncomfortable auditory sensations caused by output switching from one type of broadcast to another type of broadcast. The broadcast receiving apparatus is configured to perform control to bring the acoustic characteristic of pre-switching broadcast closer to the acoustic characteristic of post-switching broadcast based on received field strength of analog broadcast signals when the output is switched from one broadcast to another broadcast.

Abstract:
The invention aims to reduce the amount of circuitry in a receiver for receiving broadcast radio waves transmitted using an IBOC system that allows simultaneous transmissions of an analog broadcast and a digital broadcast with the same content. The amount of circuitry is reduced by making provisions to reproduce only a monaural signal from an analog demodulator. To reduce the unnaturalness that may occur when switching from the digital broadcast to the analog broadcast, a blend processing section mixes the two signals in a smoothly varying ratio during the switching.
