Abstract: 1,068,448. Bearings. PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. March 24, 1966 [March 27, 1965], No. 13052/66. Heading F2A. A hydrodynamic fluid thrust bearing has two patterns of grooves and means for conducting lubricant to the grooves of each pattern. The grooves of the two patterns are arranged so that, upon rotation of a rotatable thrust member in one direction, lubricant is drawn into the grooves of one pattern to generate a pressure therein and, upon rotation of the rotatable thrust member in the opposite direction, lubricant is drawn into the grooves of the other pattern to generate a pressure therein. The centreline of each groove may have the form of a logarithmic spiral, the direction of the spiral in one pattern of grooves may be opposite to the direction of the spiral in the other pattern of grooves and an annular channel may be provided between the two patterns of grooves for conducting lubricant to the inner pattern of grooves. In an embodiment, upon rotation of a thrust member (2) in one direction, lubricant is supplied to grooves (5), Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), via passages (7) and an annular channel (6) whereas, upon rotation of the thrust member (2) in the opposite direction, lubricant is supplied to grooves (4) by means not shown. In other embodiments, a spherical-shaped rotary thrust member (2), Fig. 4 (not shown), has two annular series of grooves (4 and 5); a frusto-conical shaped rotary thrust member is provided; the grooves (4), Fig. 8 (not shown), are straight; and the grooves (4 and 5), Fig. 7 (not shown), are arranged in herring-bone patterns.

Abstract: 1,096,641. Bearings. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. Feb. 25, 1965 [Feb. 29, 1964], No. 8155/65. Heading F2A. In a fluid thrust bearing, one of the thrust bearing surfaces has spiral grooves 3 therein (as shown in Fig. 2) for generating pressure and an annular member 7, 8, Fig. 1, is provided to resist radial movement of a shaft 4 supported by the bearing; the member 7, 8 being separated from the shaft 4 by a clearance 9 and being urged by the pressurized fluid against a seal 11 which is mounted in a recess in a portion 10 of a supporting member 2. In use, the fluid, pressurized by the spiral grooves 3, flows through an annular gap 5 formed between the shaft 4 and the supporting member 2 and passes to a chamber 6 in the supporting member 2. The chamber 6 is connected to an annular recess 6a in the supporting member 2 and the seal 11 prevents escape of fluid from the recess 6a so that the fluid can only leak through the clearance 9.
