Abstract: A volatile component released from an epicarp of a banana or an avocado is collected. By using a detector, a detection result of the volatile component is obtained. The detector is configured to output the detection result in accordance with an amount of one or more marker components selected from the group consisting of specific compounds. Based on the detection result, the ripeness of the banana or the avocado is assessed.
