Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for sanitizing consumable products, utensils or any of a variety of products that may benefit from being sanitized using an ultraviolet light source within a cooking appliance, such as a microwave oven. The cooking appliance includes a cooking chamber capable of receiving microwave energy. A UV light source is positioned outside the cooking chamber, and an optical system directs UV light from the UV light source into the cooking chamber.
