The novel compounds of the invention are useful as pigments for coloring, printing inks, plastics, and, especially, surface coatings.

Isoindoline colorants of the formula ##STR1## where X is a radical of the formula ##STR2## R.sup.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, benzyl, phenyl, 1-naphthyl or a 5-membered or 6-membered, unsaturated heterocyclic radical which may or may not be benzo-fused, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, independently of one another, are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, benzyl, phenyl or 1-naphthyl, and the ring A and the phenyl, naphthyl and heterocyclic radicals in R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 can be substituted by groups which do not confer solubility. The colorants give deep, strongly bluish red hues in surface coatings, printing inks and plastics. The colorations have good lightfastness and fastness to migration.

A process for the manufacture of pigments of the formula ##STR1## where ##STR2## is a radical of barbituric acid or of one of its derivatives and ##STR3## is a divalent radical of benzene, 1,2- or 2,3-naphthalene, pyridine or pyrazine, which radical may be unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, phenyl, carbamoyl, alkylcarbonylamino (where alkyl is of 1 to 17 carbon atoms), benzoylamino, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenoxy, the number of substituents being 1 or 2, by condensing amino-imino compounds or bis-imino compounds of the formula ##STR4## where R' and R" may be identical or different and are hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, hydroxyalkyl of 2 or 3 carbon atoms, phenylalkyl of 7 or 8 carbon atoms or phenyl, with barbituric acid or its derivatives, in the molar ratio of 1:2, in water in the presence of aliphatic carboxylic acids, aromatic carboxylic acids, aliphatic sulfonic acids, aromatic sulfonic acids, mineral acids or mixtures of these, at a pH of from 1 to 6, at from 20.degree. to 150.degree. C. The compounds I are obtained in high yield and good purity. These pigments are readily dispersed and give brilliant yellow colorations of good fastness to light and weathering.

Novel pigmentary forms of isoindoline pigments which contain(a) a pigmentary form of the compound of the formula (I) ##STR1## and (b) from 2 to 50% by weight, based on (I), of one or more isoindoline pigments of the formula (II) ##STR2## where R is --CN, --CONH.sub.2, N--C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylcarbamyl, N-phenylcarbamyl, 2-quinazolonyl, 2-quinoxazolonyl and 2-benzimidazolyl, and the phenyl radical in the phenylcarbamyl and/or the heterocyclic radicals stated for R are unsubstituted or substituted, are obtained by heating a mixture of the finely divided pigments (I) and (II) in an aqueous medium.Advantageously, the mixture is prepared directly by synthesizing (I) in the presence of finely divided (II) in water.The novel pigmentary forms are transparent pigments which have high color strength, and whose transparency and color strength are substantially superior to those of very similar pigments.
