Technologies are generally provided for customizing operational aspects of a computing system associated with an interactive surface based on determining user identity through detection of one or more user identity attributes on the interactive surface. User identity attributes such as a finger orientation, a finger weight/pressure, a separation between fingers, a finger length, an arm orientation, a handedness, a posture, a DNA, or similar unique features of a user may be detected through an input device associated/integrated with the interactive surface, for example, by employing a camera-based Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR) system for capturing finger orientation through infrared light reflection, an overhead camera, or through Diffuse Illumination. Multiple attributes may be used to increase a confidence level in user identity determination in synchronous or asynchronous shared use of the interactive surface.

The use of a uni-pressure and dual-pressure augmented mouse permits users to simultaneously control cursor positions as well as multiple levels of discrete action modes for common desktop application tasks. One, two or more independent pressure sensors can be mounted onto several locations on the body of the mouse. Various selection techniques are described to control many discrete levels and to simultaneously control different variable functions with pressure sensors on an input device for an electronic device.

Selectable objects in a computer display are arranged in a cascading menu including parent menu and submenu objects in which an activation area is provided in association with each submenu displayed which spans between the submenu and the associated parent menu object. The activation area provides the function of maintaining display of a submenu associated with a selected parent menu object while the cursor remains in contact with the activation area. An override function is provided to minimize trapping of the cursor within the activation area. The shape of the activation area is generally triangular with opposing side edges extending from an apex and the parent object being curved inwardly towards one another to also minimize trapping. The characteristics of the activation area can also be varied according to user motion patterns.

The peripheral input and output device embeds a touch-screen display onto a mouse. Users interact with the display of the mouse using direct touch, whilst also performing regular cursor-based mouse interactions. The resulting device has many unique capabilities, in particular for interacting with auxiliary windows, such as toolbars, palettes, pop-ups and dialog-boxes. By migrating these windows onto a peripheral computer mouse challenges such as screen real-estate use and window management can be alleviated.
