Abstract: A layer of magnesium fluoride is slant evaporated onto a substrate to provide an oriented microstructure thereon capable of causing sympathetic alignment of liquid crystal molecules. A process is used in which particles from a heated mass of magnesium fluoride travel along straight line paths directly from the heated mass to the substrate.
