Abstract: A tooling fixture suitable for use in infiltrating a fibrous preform with a flow of reactant gas includes an outer surface and an inner surface defining a thickness therebetween, and a plurality of holes extending through the thickness of the tooling fixture. The plurality of holes includes a first hole having cylindrical geometry with a first pair of dimensions comprising a first length and a first diameter, a second hole having cylindrical geometry with a second pair of dimensions comprising a second length and a second diameter, and a third hole having cylindrical geometry with a third pair of dimensions comprising a third length and a third diameter. At least one dimension of the first pair of dimensions is different from at least one dimension of the second pair of dimensions, and at least one dimension of the second pair of dimensions is different from at least one dimension of the third pair of dimensions.

Abstract: A tooling assembly for perforating a fibrous preform comprises a tooling fixture comprising a plurality of receiving holes, and a spiked array comprising a plate and a plurality of metallic spikes projecting away from the plate and toward the tooling fixture, each of the plurality of metallic spikes corresponding to and extending towards one of the plurality of receiving holes. The spiked array is engageable with the tooling fixture such that the plurality of spikes extend at least partially into respective ones of the plurality of receiving holes.

Abstract: A method of forming a ceramic matrix composite includes preparing a plurality of fibrous ceramic plies by applying a binder solution loaded with ceramic particles to each of a first subset of plies, and applying the binder solution without ceramic particles to each of a second subset of plies. The method further includes arranging the plurality of plies to form a preform with a gradient along a thickness direction of the preform by stacking the first subset of plies to form a first zone of the preform, and stacking individual ones of the second subset of the plies on both sides of the first zone to form a second zone on each side of the first zone. Loading of the ceramic particles is higher in the first zone than in the second zones. The method further includes densifying the preform with a ceramic matrix.
