A track joint is provided with a controlled running clearance by means of a controlled interstice producing membrane placed between the opposing axial thrust surfaces of the joint. The membrane is of a substance which sacrifically self-destructs upon the initial pivotal movements of the joint. The purpose of the membrane is to relieve the joint of compressive loads which become locked in the joint during its assembly and can cause galling of the thrust surfaces and injury to track seals in the joint.

Conventional apparatus for pressing retaining rings into a track assembly do not properly line up with the retaining ring when the press is under the high pressure required. The subject apparatus overcomes this problem by providing a self-aligning anvil for driving a tool. The anvil has an adapter for mounting it to the press and an anvil member with a work surface for engaging the tool. The adapter engages the anvil member along a semi-spherical mating surface having a radius extending from the intersection of the centerline of the anvil and a plane extending through a tool land of the tool where it engages the workpiece. The anvil member is attached to the adapter by a pin attached to the anvil member which extends across the semi-spherical mating surface into a resilient member mounted in the adapter at its center.

An improved articulate chain (10) including pivotally interconnected sections (12,14,16) of spaced, coacting links (18,20,22) having the chain driving members (54) intermediate the pivot connections (58,60) to reduce the chain loads thereon. The links (18,20,22) are locked together in a common plane (56) by integral externally splined projections (82) extending therefrom into the internally splined drive bushing (96) to resist torque loads and increase the structural integrity of the chain (10). The links (18,20,22) are releasably coupled together to permit expeditious disassembly and reassembly thereof for servicing.

A wheel (16) in a continuous track assembly (12) has a hub (18) and a rim (20) connected to the hub (18). First apparatus (29) engages a track (14) of the assembly (12) to drive an associated work vehicle (10). Second apparatus (42) mounts the rim (20) in a movable relationship to the hub (18). The first apparatus (29) in movable relationship to the rim (20) to substantially absorb and isolate noise created by engagement of the wheel (16) and track (14) to drive the vehicle (10). The rim (20) is movable relative to the hub (18) to substantially isolate impact forces exerted on the wheel (16) resulting from operation of the vehicle (10).

A track structure (10) having an annular seal (24) defined by a C-shaped cross section for movably sealing the end (18) of the track pin (17) to an outer bushing surface (20). A shallow portion (32) of the seal is impregnated with lapping compound to lap the confronting sealing surface (20) of the bushing so as to provide a positive seal therebetween. The improved seal eliminates the need for lapping the sealing surfaces of the track structure prior to assembly. The portion (32) of the sealing surface of the seal impregnated with lapping compound provides the desired lapping of the confronting track structure surface as the result of relative movement between the seal and that surface which may be effected during a break-in period as desired.

A non-directional surface finish along a first portion of the length of the pin within the first bore forms a fluid seal with the first bore, whereas a directional surface finish along a different portion of the length of the pin within the first bore inhibits removal of the first end of the pin from the first bore. A method of coupling together machine components via an enhanced press fit is further provided, utilizing a pin having a first surface finish configured to form a fluid seal with a bore of a machine component, and a second surface finish configured to inhibit removal of the pin from the bore.

An assembly method for a machine track segment includes positioning first and second sets of track links on at least one pin, installing keepers on the at least one pin and inhibiting disassembly of the links by interlocking keeper retainers with the machine track segment, for instance rotationally interlocking the keeper retainers via external threads with threaded bores in the track links.
