SCHIFF BASES DERIVED FROM BUTANONE AND AN ALIPHATIC PRIMARY AMINE ARE CATALYSTS IN THE PREPARATION OF A-MONOCYANOETHYLATED BUTANONE BY REACTING ACRYLONITRILE WITH AT LEAST AN EQUIMOLAR QUANTITY OF ACRYLONITRILE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ACID. THE A-MONO-CYANOETHYLATED BUTANONES, SUCH AS 4-METHYL-5-OXOHEXANE NITRILE AND 5-OXOHEPTANE NITRILE ARE PRODUCED WITH ONLY MINOR AMOUNTS OF CONTAMINANT''S THAT ARE EASILY REMOVED. Abstract:
Coumarin, a useful flavoring agent resembling vanilla beans, is produced by contacting dihydrocoumarin with a small quantity of a dehydrogenation catalyst such as palladium or platinum at elevated temperatures, optionally in the presence of oxygen. The alkylated dihydrocoumarin compounds may also be processed according to the disclosed procedure to produce the corresponding alkyl substituted products.

SCHIFF BASES DERIVED FROM ACETONE AND ALIPHATIC LOWER ALKYL PRIMARY AMINE ARE EMPLOYED IN THE REACTION OF ACRYLONITRILE AND AN EXCESS OF ACETONE IN A LIQUID MEDIUM IN THE DISCLOSED PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 4-OXOCAPRONITRILE. THE CATALYSTS HAVE A BOILING POINT BELOW 150*C. AND ARE EASILY RECOVERED FROM THE REACTION MIXTURE. THE PRODUCT 4-OXOCAPRONITRILE IS A STARTING MATERIAL IN THE PREPARATION OF A-PIPECOLINE.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of a carbon-substituted piperidine by the hydrogenation of a N-substituted gamma -cyanoketoimine in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, is disclosed. A primary amine having the same substituent as the nitrogen atom of the starting gamma -cyanoketoimine is receovered in high yield from the reaction mixture. The carbon substituted piperidines thus produced are useful as starting materials for the production of herbicides or pharmaceuticals.
