Disclosed herein is a washing machine having an elastic member for providing resilient power to the door in a direction in which the door is opened and a damping member arranged to damp pivoting of the door or an inner door. The washing machine has a structure to smoothly open/shut the door and inner door combined together, and if supplementary washing is required, to smoothly open/shut only the inner door.

A door hinge apparatus having a coupling structure between a door and a cabinet, and a drum-type washing machine having the same. The drum type washing machine includes an inlet formed through the cabinet to allow laundry to be inserted or withdrawn therethrough, a door coupled to the cabinet to open and close the inlet, and a hinge between the door and the cabinet. The hinge includes a cabinet bracket coupled to a front surface of the cabinet, a door bracket coupled to the door, a first moving unit coupled to the door bracket to allow the door to be pivoted with respect to the cabinet, and a second moving unit coupled to the cabinet bracket to allow the door to protrude forward from the cabinet and be substantially parallel and spaced from the cabinet. The door opens the inlet by moving forward by a predetermined distance or more from the cabinet and then pivoting, so that moisture in the drum is removed to some extent before the inlet is opened and the door can open without friction between the door and the cabinet.

In a washing machine including a damping device provided to damp a vibration transferred from a washing tub, the damping device includes a suspension member, a damping unit provided to move along the suspension member, and a friction unit provided in the damping unit to form a frictional force with the suspension member, and the friction unit is disposed while being spaced apart from an inner surface of the damping unit to be selectively movable depending on a level of the vibration of the washing tub.

Disclosed herein are a washing machine including a moving mechanism and a method of controlling the washing machine. The washing machine includes a cabinet, a tub disposed inside the cabinet, a drum rotatably provided inside the tub, a front panel which is located at one side of the cabinet and comprises an opening through which laundry is inserted and taken out, and a driving unit which moves the tub to change a space between the tub and the front panel. It is possible to prevent oscillation from being transferred by spacing the front panel and the tub apart during washing. Also, it is possible to provide convenience for a user by arranging the front panel and the tub adjacent to each other while inserting or taking out laundry.
