    摘要: In a thermally assisted magnetic recording head having a light source and a waveguide to lead a laser beam radiated from the light source to a front end of the magnetic head, while blocking an adverse effect of heat generated in the light source and securing a good floating characteristic, the light source and the magnetic head are optically coupled with high efficiency and the magnetic head itself is reduced in size. This invention provides a reflection mirror that is formed of a part or whole of one inclined end surface of the semiconductor laser mounted on the first submount. Near one end surface of the slider is provided the optical waveguide that pierces through the slider in a direction of the thickness thereof. The slider is mounted on the second submount and the positions of the first submount and the second submount are adjusted to practically align the light axis of the beam emitted from the mirror with the light axis of the optical waveguide, thereby realizing a novel thermally assisted magnetic recording head.

    摘要: A thermally assisted magnetic recording head with highly efficient optical coupling, while guiding a laser beam from a semiconductor laser element, i.e., a light source, to a leading end thereof, eliminating an influence due to heat generated by the element, and having excellent floating characteristics. The thermally assisted magnetic recording head includes a substrate 2 having a first optical waveguide 1, a semiconductor laser element 100, and a slider 4 having a second optical waveguide 3 formed on an end surface. The semiconductor laser element 100 is fixed on the substrate 2 so that light emitted from the element 100 propagates through the first optical waveguide 1 and a slider 4 is fixed on the substrate 2 so that light emitted from the first optical waveguide 1 propagates through the second optical waveguide 3. High optical coupling efficiency is then achieved, while ensuring both heat-dissipating and floating characteristics.

    摘要: Provided is a structure of a heat assisted magnetic recording head gimbal assembly that allows common inexpensive TE-mode LDs to be utilized. The heat assisted magnetic recording head gimbal assembly comprises: a light source unit having a light emitting element mounted on a parabolic solid submount; a heat assisted magnetic recording head comprising a magnetic recording element, a read element, a near field transducer, and a waveguide for guiding light from the light emitting element into the near field transducer; a slider including the heat assisted magnetic recording head and which flies above a disk; and a suspension for supporting the slider. The light emitting element of the light source unit is an edge-emitting LD and the light source unit is arranged on the opposite side of an bearing surface of the slider such that the light emitting surface of the light emitting element faces the slider, apertures are created in the suspension, and the slider is connected to the suspension in a way that a part of the light source unit penetrates through the apertures of the suspension.
