    Abstract: In a wireless network, a Distributed Unit (DU) wirelessly receives a service request from User Equipment (UE) and transfers the service request to a Centralized Unit (CU). The CU transfers the service request to a network controller which selects an individual functionality split for the UE. The DU wirelessly exchanges user communications with the UE. The DU circuitry processes the user communications with some of a Physical Layer (PHY), Media Access Control (MAC), Radio Link Control (RLC), Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP), Radio Resource Control (RRC), and Service Data Adaptation Protocol (SDAP) based on the selected functionality split. The CU circuitry processes the user communications the rest of the PHY, MAC, RLC, PDCP, RRC, and SDAP based on the selected functionality split.

    Abstract: A wireless network controller selects a network slice for a User Equipment (UE). The wireless network controller selects a functionality split for the UE based on the selected network slice and indicates the selected functionality split to a Centralized Unit (CU). The CU indicates the selected functionality split to a Distributed Unit (DU). The DU exchanges user communications with the UE. The DU processes the user communications with the network applications allocated to the DU in the selected functionality split for the UE. The DU exchanges the user communications with the CU. The CU processes the user communications with the network applications allocated to the CU in the selected functionality split for the UE.
