Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the efficient, sustainable and gentle preparation of bio-based alkanediols, especially 1,2-alkanediols, at moderate temperatures based on a recycling of side products and non-reacted educts. The present invention also relates to a composition comprising at least two alkanediols obtainable by said process and to the use of said composition in consumer product formulations. In addition, the present invention relates to consumer products as such comprising the inventive composition.
