Abstract: Disclosed is an optically coded encoder especially adapted for use in keyboards for calculators, adding machines and other applications requiring the generation of coded electrical signals in response to the activation of an input key. Encoding is accomplished by the imposition of an optically coded member in substantially columnar light beams thereby modulating the beams and detection of the modulated beams to generate a code which is uniquely representative of the activated input key.
