Abstract:
Thermal barrier coatings and methods to make such coatings present improved resistance to CMAS infiltration. The method for forming a thermal barrier coating includes applying a layer of the thermal barrier coating to a component having a surface, forming a plurality of first channels in the thermal barrier coating, and forming a plurality of second channels in the thermal barrier coating. The first channels extend through a thickness of the thermal barrier coating from an interface with the surface of the component to a free surface opposite the interface. The second channels are disposed between the free surface and the interface and extending lengthwise generally parallel to the free surface of the thermal barrier coating.

A thermal barrier coating that includes a YAG-based ceramic is prepared by a solution precursor plasma spray method that includes injecting a precursor solution into a thermal jet, evaporating solvent from the precursor solution droplets, and pyrolyzing the resulting solid to form a YAG-based ceramic that is melted and deposited on a substrate. The thermal barrier coating can include through-coating-thickness cracks that improve the strain tolerance of the coating.
Abstract:
A method for manufacturing a coating includes dissolving at least one salt in a mixture of water and ethanol to form a precursor solution, adding an additive to the precursor solution to form a fuel solution, and injecting the fuel solution into a plasma flame. The additive includes at least one of urea or ammonium acetate. The additive functions as a fuel to increase a temperature of the plasma flame. The method further includes manufacturing the coating on a substrate. The coating includes a garnet structure including a predetermined amount of yttrium-aluminum, one or more first cracks extending completely through a thickness of the coating, and a porosity greater than ten volume percent.
