    摘要: A method of determining a direction of a power boost applied to a power cylinder of a variable effort power steering system includes measuring a pressure of a hydraulic fluid between a pump and a control valve. A first position of the hand wheel is detected and initialized when the pressure is within a pre-defined equilibrium pressure range. A second position of the hand wheel is detected in response to rotational movement of the hand wheel. The first position and the second position of the hand wheel are measured in cumulative degrees rotated left or right of a on-center orientation of the hand wheel. The second position is subtracted from the first position to obtain a differential value representing the direction of the power boost. A negative differential value represents a first direction and a positive differential value represents a second direction of the power boost.

    摘要: The invention provides a method for controlling valve stiffness in a power steering system. The method includes the step of engaging a pinion and a spool shaft with respect to one another for turning at least two wheels of a vehicle in response to rotation of a steering wheel from an on-center orientation. The method also includes the step of variably assisting movement of the pinion with a hydraulic power steering device having a valve movable between a closed configuration and an open configuration. The method also includes the step of moving the valve from the open configuration to the closed configuration in response to rotation of the spool shaft relative to the pinion from an on-center orientation to assist the pinion in rotation for turning the at least two wheels. The method also includes the step of first disposing a torsion rod having a first stiffness between the pinion and spool shaft to resist rotation of the spool shaft relative to the pinion from the on-center orientation and resist movement of the valve from the open configuration to the closed configuration. The method also includes the step of second disposing a magnetic coupling having a variable second stiffness in parallel with the torsion rod to resist rotation of the spool shaft relative to the pinion from the on-center orientation and resist movement of the valve from the open configuration to the closed configuration. The first stiffness and the variable second stiffness cooperate to define an overall valve stiffness. The method also includes the step of varying the variable second stiffness generated by the magnetic coupling with an electric coil to vary the overall valve stiffness. The method also includes the step of maximizing the variable second stiffness generated by the magnetic coupling when the spool shaft and the pinion are on-center with respect to one another.

    摘要: A permanent magnet assembly for an electromagnetic mechanism in a motor vehicle power steering gear includes a metal ring having a plurality of radially oriented permanent magnets defined thereon and a plastic retaining hub attached to the metal ring. The metal ring has an annular end wall, an internal annular shoulder facing the opposite direction from the end wall, and a plurality of V-shaped notches in the end wall. Each V-shaped notch has a pair of flat sides converging at a linear junction tipped back from the plane of the annular end wall. A plastic retaining hub is formed by injection molding plastic in a mold cavity to which the end wall of the metal ring is exposed so that, upon curing of the injection molded plastic, the end wall of the metal ring is seated against an annular side of a socket in a rim of the retaining hub, integral V-shaped lugs on the retaining hub protrude into the V-shaped notches, and a lip of the retaining hub closes behind the internal annular shoulder. Dimensional shrinkage of the plastic retaining hub during curing effects a frictional driving connection between the metal ring and the plastic retaining hub and wedges the V-shaped lugs into the V-shaped notches.

    摘要: In a four-wheel steering system for automotive vehicles of the type having a front rack and pinion steering gear of the front wheels and a rear rack and pinion steering gear for the rear wheels, a gear box is disposed between the control shaft from the front steering gear and the pinion shaft of the rear steering gear. A crank assembly having a variable eccentricity wrist pin is disposed on the end of the control shaft within the gear box. The wrist pin is slidably received in a track on a gear sector in the gear box. The gear sector meshes with a spur gear on the end of the rear pinion shaft within the gear box. In a null position of the wrist pin, the latter is on the axis of rotation of the control shaft so that no rear steering occurs. When the wrist pin is moved from the null position and the control shaft rotated, the gear sector is pivoted in a direction corresponding to the direction of displacement of the wrist pin thereby to rotate the spur gear and steer the rear wheels.
