    Abstract: A carbon ring for a seal assembly in a gas turbine engine includes an outer face extending circumferentially around a center axis of the carbon ring. The carbon ring also includes an inner face extending around the center axis and disposed radially inward from the outer face. A forward face of the carbon ring extends radially between the inner face and the outer face. A rear face of the carbon ring extends radially between the inner face and the outer face and is disposed axially opposite the forward face. At least one tab extends axially from at least one of the forward face and the rear face.

    Abstract: A main shaft bearing compartment seal system is described herein. The modified ring groove geometry creates two distinct cavities or steps for a piston ring and a wave spring. This concept provides a separate groove cavity for the spring independent of the fool-proofing and clearance cavity. This modified ring groove geometry increases first face coverage and reduces exposure risk for eccentricity of wave spring to piston ring, to avoid potential disengagement and improve function and performance of the seal assembly and engine.A piston ring may comprise a first face configured to form a first seal between the piston ring and a cylindrical ID bore, a second face configured to form a second seal between the piston ring and a carbon seal assembly, and a third face configured to interface with a surface of a spring, wherein the third face is longer than the surface of the spring.

    Abstract: A seal housing is disposed to support an axially facing seal segment, and comprises a substrate and a coating. The substrate has an inner annular surface, an axially facing substrate surface, and a corner feature at an intersection of the inner annular surface and the axially facing substrate surface. The corner feature includes an annular notch in the inner annular surface, and a chamfer extending from the annular notch to the axially facing substrate surface. The coating is formed on the axially facing substrate surface and into the corner feature of the substrate, and has a coating surface, parallel to the axially facing substrate surface, that terminates at the inner annular surface and abuts the seal segment.

    Abstract: A seal assembly includes a first and second seats. The first seat includes an axial portion extending circumferentially around a center axis and extending axially from a first end to a second end. A radial portion extends circumferentially around the axial portion and extends radially from the axial portion between the first end and the second end. A cavity is formed in the radial portion and extends circumferentially around the axial portion. A second seat includes a radial segment extending circumferentially around the center axis and extending radially from an inner surface to an outer surface of the radial segment. An axial segment extends circumferentially around the first end of the first seat, and extends axially from the radially segment to a distal end. The axial segment includes a tapered outer surface that tapers radially inward toward the distal end. The distal end is received in the cavity.
