    Abstract: A bearing assembly monitoring system includes a bearing assembly supporting rotation of a rotating member. The bearing assembly includes a fixed portion and rotatable portion. A piezoelectric element is mounted to the fixed portion and generates an electric signal in response to a vibration of the fixed portion. A first transceiver is electrically coupled to the piezoelectric element to receive the electrical signal generated by the piezoelectric element and generate a signal indicative of the vibration of the fixed portion. A gas turbine engine bearing monitoring system and a method are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method of determining wear of a seal element includes rotating a seal plate relative to the seal element and such that the seal plate and the seal element form a rotational sealing interface. The seal element includes an insert embedded in the seal element. A portion of the seal element is worn with a sealing face of the seal plate. The insert is contacted with the sealing face of the seal plate. A portion of the insert is worn to create a wear particle of the insert. The presence of the wear particle in a lubrication oil is sensed with an oil monitoring system.

    Abstract: A method for monitoring a gear and bearing system having at least two inter-meshing gears and at least one bearing includes detecting gear and bearing vibrations with at least one vibration sensor operable to generate a signal representative of the detected gear vibrations. A carrier frequency is identified from the generated signal. A band pass filter is applied to the signal at the carrier frequency to create a filtered signal. An envelope is extracted from the filtered signal to create an extracted signal. A time-frequency analysis is then applied to the extracted signal which allows for identification of degradation of the gears.

    Abstract: An assembly for pivoting a flap according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a structure is mounted at least partially around an axis. The structure is attached to a pivotable flap arranged to define a nozzle area. A cable passes through an orifice defined by the flap. An actuator system is operable to mechanically retract the cable therein to lessen the nozzle area and mechanically extend the cable to enable the flow to increase the nozzle area. The actuator system is engaged with the cable. A segment of the cable, opposite the actuator system, is attached to a fixed structure. A method of providing a variable fan exit area is also disclosed.
