摘要: A binding line including at least first and second binding line sections. The first binding line section is adapted to transport books therealong to a book exit station and the second binding line section is adapted to transport books therealong from a book entry station. The binding line includes a book transferring mechanism or subsystem for moving books from the book exit station of the first binding line section to the book entry station of the second binding line section as well as devices associated with book leaving the book exit station and books entering the book entry station for tracking books during transfer from the first binding line section to the second binding line section. The first binding line section can run at the same or a different speed than the second binding line section. In addition, the binding line can include asynchronous or synchronous multiple first and/or second binding line sections.

摘要: A system and method for assembling and binding books and for printing an address or a personalized message in accordance with coded information. The system includes a main control with a data processor and a memory for coded address and message information. One or more bindery lines each has means for gathering and assembling sections to form a book and for imaging the book with a personalized image. A line control has a data processor connected with the bindery line to control selection and assembly of signatures and imaging in accordance with the control information. Operator terminals at the main and line controls have visual display with touch screen operation input. A communication network connects the main control with each of the line controls. Address and control information from a magnetic tape is transferred to disk memory at the main control. This information is later transmitted over the communication network to the line controls. The vacuum valves of the bindery line signature delivery units and the operation of ink jet units to position message fields on the book are timed by observation of the operation of the line at slow speed and the entry of timing control information through an operator terminal.

摘要: In a flat gathering binding system it is necessary to use a cover breaker to apply pressure to the book and cover to form a sharp square fold on each side. A cover breaker control system includes a motor which is coupled to a cover breaker carriage for varying the relative position of first and second movable cover breaker plates which are used to apply the pressure. A controller calculates the difference between book thickness which the plates are set for and a desired thickness, and is operable to vary the relative positioning by a distance corresponding to this difference so that when the plates are driven to break the cover they are spaced a distance apart according to the desired thickness.
