The starting point of a new concept in a latch needle (1) is an attachment of the latch spring (22) in the sawslot (9) of the latch needle from the side of the needle back (7). For this purpose the latch needle (1) has spring-supporting pockets (19, 21) accessible from the needle back (7) or other structures adapted to receive the ends (25, 26) of the latch spring (22). The spring-supporting pockets (19, 21) are closed toward the needle back (7) at least to such an extent that the ends (25, 26) of the latch spring (22) are held in a form-locking, or at least in a captive manner in the spring-supporting pockets (19, 21). Such a latch needle has a reduced tolerance sensitivity during manufacture. The described needle concept makes possible further improvements which contribute to the operational safety and service life of the latch needle.

A latch needle for loop-forming textile machines includes a needle shank having an upper side, a back and a sawslot extending into the needle shank from the upper side and oriented parallel to the shank. A hook is provided at an end of the needle shank. A spring element is disposed in the sawslot and has at least one end supported by the needle shank. A needle latch is supported in the sawslot for pivotal motion about an axis between a closed position in which the needle latch engages, with a frontal end thereof, the hook and a rearward position. The needle latch has a latch shank which includes an upper side and a lower side. In the rearward position the needle latch lies, with the upper side of the latch shank, on the upper side of the needle shank or is situated in the vicinity of the upper side of the needle shank. The latch shank further has an end part formed as a cam engaged by the spring element. The cam includes a component formed of a flat portion and/or a kink edge at the upper side of the latch shank. The component, cooperating with the spring element, determines and maintains the rearward position of the needle latch. The cam has an arcuate cam face adjoining the component and having, from the pivot axis of the needle latch, a radial distance which gradually decreases from the upper side of the latch shank towards its lower side.

A needle latch having a latch back provided with engagement faces is pivotally supported by the latch rivet for swinging motions between a closed position in which the needle latch engages the needle hook and an open position in which the engagement faces on the latch back lie on the supporting surfaces of the shank cheeks. The sawslot has, in a series as viewed from needle hook, a first sawslot portion containing the throughgoing aperture and a second sawslot portion having a width greater than the width of the first sawslot portion. The supporting surfaces are located in a zone of the second sawslot portion which has a depth greater than one half of the shank height and which is closed underneath the supporting surfaces. A third sawslot portion adjoins the second sawslot portion and has a width less than the width of the second sawslot portion.
