摘要: Plastic pipe is belled under pressure by inserting what is, in effect, a telescoping mandrel into a heat-softened pipe end with great axial force immediately after two mold halves with cavities defining the desired bell configurations have been brought together under pressure. The softened pipe end is not only expanded to a bell configuration by the mandrel, but is compressed by the radial annular end wall of a sleeve which slides axially over the mandrel into the spacing between the mandrel and the mold halves defining the bell-shaped cavity. Thereby, not only may the heat-softened pipe end be molded to assume an exact configuration to a high degree of tolerance, but the normal thinning of the walls of the pipe end which occurs with its belling may be re-thickened by the axial compression of the sleeve to the original pipe wall thickness. After such radial expansion and axial compression of the heat-softened pipe end to the precise bell shape and tolerance, the mold halves are first cooled, the sleeve is first withdrawn axially, then the mandrel is withdrawn, and lastly the mold halves are separated to permit the belled pipe to be removed.Apparatus is provided to accomplish this process by bringing the mold halves together under great pressure followed by the axial movement into the pipe end of the mandrel and its axially compressing sleeve.

摘要: A multiple station plastic pipe belling machine in which an endless conveyor periodically receives one of a series of plastic pipes as each pipe is dumped from a V-trough receiving such pipes in sequence after their extrusion and cutting into predetermined pipe lengths, disposes the pipes so received parallel to, but spaced from, each other and advances the thus-disposed pipes in predetermined increments; positions the pipes in such a manner that their ends to be belled are first passed in such increments through a heater adjacent the edge of the endless conveyor, while the pipes are continuously rotated until each pipe passes out of the heater and is then carried in such increments by the endless conveyor into the first of a plurality of belling stations where a pair of semi-circular clamps encircle the pipe end and a mandrel or plug is inserted therein. After insertion of the plug, the clamps are removed and the thus-plugged pipe is further moved incrementally through several additional belling machine stations in a cooling area until the pipe end is sufficiently cooled, whereupon the plug is withdrawn so that the pipe may be further advanced by the endless conveyor for discharge from the machine. As soon as one pipe is moved into the cooling area from this first clamping and plugging station, the next pipe is clamped and belled in that station. The plugs project from blocks which, after first being moved into the first station transversely to the path of the pipe end carried by the endless conveyor, thereby to enable the plug to be inserted in a pipe end, are then moved along the incremental path of the pipe end to the last belling station, whereupon the block is moved back transversely from and out of said path to a point behind the other blocks so that it may be shifted back behind the other blocks to a position for removement back into the first station. All movements of the machine are synchronized through appropriate clutching, gearing, sprocket and chain devices, and this synchronism is characterized by being of predictable and repeatable time span.

摘要: A compression belling machine for precision belling simultaneously of a plurality of plastic pipe ends. This is accomplished by selectively feeding groups of pipes, the ends of which are to be belled, first into a heating unit and then, transferring them by an endless conveyor, simultaneously into a belling station having a plurality of molds one-half of each of which molds is stationary and the other half of which may be moved apart from its mating half to permit insertion between the separated halves of a heated end of one pipe. Each of the molds is entirely separate from the other molds and each mold may be removed from the apparatus for replacement. All mold halves, however, are moved together by a common hydraulic head. Control means are provided to operate a novel sequential type feeder and so that pipes may be selectively deposited into the heater and then aligned with their ends properly inserted into the particular mold cavities.

摘要: A machine for removing a precut length of plastic pipe from an extrusion line, providing a bell on one end thereof, and providing a chamfer on the opposite end thereof. The pipe is received in a V-shaped trough along which it is longitudinally moved as it is delivered from the extruder. At predetermined intervals, a plurality of hydraulic pushers are actuated to move the pipe laterally from the trough onto a conveyor. The conveyor is indexed to a first position in which the axial location of the pipe is corrected and the end to be belled is heated. In a predetermined sequence of events, the conveyor is then indexed to a second position in which a belling plug is inserted into the heated end of the pipe; simultaneously, the opposite end of the pipe may be provided with an internal or external chamfer. When the conveyor is again indexed, the pipe is deposited onto a suitable system so that it may be conveyed to a shipping point.
