Abstract: A method of monitoring a software defined optical network is proposed, the optical network comprising a number of optical network nodes connected via optical links, the method including: remotely controlling a first node to send a test light signal to a second node; remotely configuring the second node to generate a predetermined response to the test light signal when the second node receives the test light signal; detecting whether a response is received; and processing the detection result to derive information relating to the operating condition of at least one of the first node and the second node.
