摘要:
Techniques for automatically adding a database device to a network of database devices include sending a first request from the database device over the network in response to detecting that the database device is connected to the network. In response to the first request, the database device receives data that identifies a database device-management server. The database device sends a second request to the database device-management server. The second request identifies the database device and requests that the device-management server register the database device as a database device on the network in response to the second request. The new database device may be a database appliance having a database process and a special purpose operating system tailored to the database process. With these techniques, a new database device can be plugged into a network and be automatically discovered, registered, and assigned management tasks without human intervention. This alleviates the load on human operators and makes adding database device to a network more reliable and simple.

Techniques for building a web site with database components include a web site building appliance having a processor, a computer readable medium, and a special purpose operating system. The computer-readable medium carries a web site wizard including a template and instructions. The template holds data indicating a first arrangement of components associated with a first type of web site. The instructions configure the processor for presenting a user with a series of one or more user interfaces including controls for modifying the first arrangement of components. The instructions also configure the processor for receiving input from the user in response to user interaction with the controls indicating a modified arrangement. The instructions further configure the processor for building the web site automatically in response to the input from the user. The web site is based on the modified arrangement. The special purpose operating system has features and configuration dictated by the web site wizard and supporting program components.

Techniques for provisioning databases for users on a wide area network such as the Internet include a first party managing one or more database systems. Second parties subscribe to database services supported by the managed database systems. The first party provides, over a network, to database applications of the second parties, access to database services to which the second parties are subscribed. The database systems may use database appliances hosting both database process(es), and non-database process(es) tailored to the needs of the database process(es). A user is therefore able to obtain database resources from an Internet Database Service Provider (IDSP) without incurring the full costs of database administrator(s), dedicated database equipment facilit(ies), or even dedicated database device(s), depending on usage. Meanwhile, the IDSP incurs minimum staffing loads because of self-service tools. Costing model and automatic billing are also described.

Techniques for provisioning databases for users on a wide area network include a first party managing one or more database systems. Multiple second parties subscribe to database services supported by the database systems managed by the first party. The first party provides, over a network, to database applications controlled by the second parties, access to the database services to which the second parties are subscribed. The database systems may use database appliances. A database appliance includes a database process and a non-database process that is-tailored to the needs of the database process. The wide area network may be a public network of computer networks, such as the Internet. With the present invention, a user is able to obtain needed database resources from an Internet Database Service Provider (IDSP) with a minimum of user effort and without the user incurring the full costs of one or more database administrators, or the costs of a dedicated database equipment facility, or even the costs of a dedicated database device, depending on usage. At the same time, the IDSP can readily provide for several database users with minimum staffing loads on the IDSP because of self-service tools provided. Furthermore, the IDSP start-up and maintenance efforts are reduced through several tools, such as the costing model and automatic billing features.
