摘要: A system for monitoring a twin trawl being towed by a vessel, the twin trawl comprising two trawl bags, two trawl doors and a clump, comprises at least one sensor arrangement for measuring distance between the doors and between one door and the clump, and a processing unit for computing geometric indicators based on the measured values. By means of the transmission of acoustic signals, the distances between the doors and the doors and the clump can be calculated and compared, and thus provide geometric indicators.

摘要: A trawling vessel is provided with a trawl net (5) for catching marine bio-resources, with a trawl sack (3) attached aft on a trawl net (5) for keeping the catch. The vessel comprises lines (51, 61) for towing and hauling the trawl net (5), and trawl drums (6) for hauling the trawl net (5). A lock chamber (1) is provided in a stern (21) of the vessel and has a main portion of its volume arranged below the design water line of the vessel. The lock chamber (1) is arranged for hauling the trawl sack (3) with the catch from the sea through a sluiceway (2) in the stern (21), for discharging the trawl sack (3), and for temporarily keeping the catch. A trunk channel (16, 12) leading up from the lock chamber (1) enables the trawl sack (3), in a generally discharged state, to be hauled up through the trunk channel (16, 12) to a deck (24), thereby leaving the catch in the lock chamber (1).

摘要: A trawl's mesh cells include at least three mesh bars. A cell's first mesh bar includes a first product strand formed by a core product strand enclosed within a sheath. The sheath resists sliding along the core product strand during the trawl's assembly and field operations. The first product strand also mechanically connects to a second product strand forming the mesh cell's second mesh bar. The mechanical connection includes a clamp which encloses at least the slide-resistant, sheathed portion of the first product strand. A particularly preferred embodiment for the sheath includes at least one spiraling product strand interwoven with other encircling product strands. The spiraling product strand has a diameter that is larger than a diameter of each of the other encircling product strands. An improved method for catching fish with a trawl system includes a step of assembling the trawl system by combining selected trawl components. The improved method also includes deploying the sheathed, first mesh bar into a body of water, and propelling it through the body of water.

摘要: The technical field of the invention generally concerns pelagic trawls used for catching large tonnages of insignificant air-bladder fish, where narrow, long cod-ends are necessary. The trawl backend of the present invention is designed so as to preclude narrowing of the backend's opening in the region of attachment of the backend to the normally narrow and constrictive codend of the Alaska Pollock Fisheries. The back end design maintains sufficient trawl back end opening so as to optimize fish flow during the entire catch period, with a circumferential stretch measure in that aft portion of the backend bordering the seam with the codend being significantly greater than the average circumferential stretch measure of the codend at the seam to the backend. Light gores are mainly are used in the backend with ribline ropes of pre-determined elongation abilities. Economy of fishing operations is thus improved and ecological conditions are enhanced.

摘要: In one aspect, the sweepline system of the invention include a sweepline chain divided into a series of uniform subunits of common length attached along its U-shaped length to the hanging chains of the bottom trawl wherein such sweepline system is provided with its own separate auxiliary floatation system. In another aspect, a series of transverse drag chains are attached relative to the sweepline chain or the like, at a series of equally spaced junctions and downwardly sweep from such junctions in a downwardly depending direction, such junctions being located below the trawl net but above the bottom of the ocean, sea or the like wherein each drag chain comprises a series of chain links of overall length L defining a series of hinges therealong at the intersection of the individual links. In yet another aspect, the auxiliary floatation system of the invention is constructed so as to maintain attaching ends of the transverse drag chains (coincident with the series of junctions) at a rest elevation E above the ocean or sea bottom wherein L>E whereby a free end portion of each drag chain rests on the ocean bottom but at any conventional towing speed, such free end portion changes orientation relative to the ocean bottom due to the resistance of the water to be angled away from the direction of net towing but wherein such free end portion still has an included segment that remains in contact with the ocean bottom to form both a physical and a visible deterrent to fish to thereby prevent their escape under the trawl net.

摘要: This invention provides a device and method for measurement of the actual on-bottom time of a sampling otter trawl used for benthic sampling. The device uses passive measurement of the actual on-bottom time without cables and wires connected to the ship, and is small enough to be mounted on a standard otter trawl door without affecting its net-towing function. The apparatus consists of a sealed bottom contacting and counting sensor which totalizes and displays the accumulated on-bottom time. Power is supplied from a self-contained battery which may be automatically recharged by a solar cell. In operation, a flexible trigger arm is mounted so as to extend below the runner on the bottom edge of the trawl door. When bottom contact is first made, the trigger arm bends and mechanically causes a magnet to move sufficiently close to actuate a magnetic switch inside a transparent electronic data module. An electronic counter inside the module will count minutes and seconds as long as the magnetic switch is closed. Whenever the spring loaded trigger arm lifts off the bottom, the counter will stop. Actual elapsed bottom time may be read from a liquid crystal display (LCD) through the transparent case after a run. The counter may be reset to zero prior to the next trawl by waving a magnet across the module face, or the time may be allowed to accumulate. The unit has been built and experimentally tested in Southern California waters, during which it was found that the device is very useful for trouble shooting and for making adjustments for weather conditions, bottom currents, trawling direction and scope length. Also, when the net fouls or picks up large debris, intelligent decisions may be made as to whether the trawl bottom time has been impacted.

摘要: A shrimp trawl or net having a second piggyback net attached to an opening in the top side of the body of the trawl and a pulser to stimulate mature shrimp to enter the opening in the second net. Alternatively, an upper deck is formed in the body of the main trawl and the pulser is positioned so as to stimulate the targeted shrimp species to enter the upper deck while non-targeted species and debris pass out the back of the trawl. Both the piggyback net and the upper deck have a releasably closable back end to allow the operator to close the net or deck during towing operations, and to open the back end after the trawl has been pulled aboard the shrimp boat.
