    摘要: A protective container for font disc segments. The container includes a housing portion for supporting the segment and a cap portion for closing the housing portion and, at the same time, for locking the segment against movement within the housing portion. More particularly, the housing portion includes an inner casing supported within an outer casing with the inner casing being of relatively flexible material and having side wall portions extending beyond the top opening in said outer casing. After insertion of the segment into the inner casing, the cap portion is placed around the extended wall portions of said inner casing and, in doing so, will not only close the container, but will also force the walls of the inner casing inwardly against the segment to positively lock it against movement. Upon removal of the cap portion, the side walls of the inner casing will spring outwardly to release the segment for easy removal from the housing.

The advance in the art is primarily in the placement of the discs in overlap relationship and then advancing or retracting the turret in order to accomplish proper positioning of the disc as opposed to the concept of the prior art in keeping all discs on one plane and then rotating the turret to bring each disc in turn into the optical system.

    摘要: An improved indicia disc for use in association with phototype setting apparatus includes a rigid glass support plate and a flexible photographic film disc carrying a plurality of fonts of alpha numeric characters. The flexible film disc is held against movement relative to the support plate by atmospheric pressure against an outer surface of the film disc. To mount the film disc on the support plate, they are rotated together at a relatively high speed about their central axes. As they are rotated, centrifugal force expels the atmosphere from between the film disc and support plate. Atmospheric pressure against the outer side of the film disc is then effective to press it securely against the support plate. In one embodiment of the invention a one-piece film disc is utilized. In another embodiment of the invention a two-piece film disc is utilized to provide greater flexibility of choice in associating various fonts of characters.

    摘要: The photocomposing machine has an integral keyboard and is especially useful in composing headlines and similar graphic material. A zoom lens is used to provide infinitely variable magnification of the characters. An especially simple manual zoom lens magnification control mechanism is provided, together with an electrical digital display device for indicating accurately the setting of the zoom lens. A line measure display is provided to indicate the total length of a line of characters being composed. The line measure is automatically re-calculated and a new measure is displayed after a change of the zoom lens setting, or of the "set size", so as to give an up-to-date reading of the line measure with the new size. Character widths are stored in pluggable read-only memory chips, one type style per chip. Kerning and white-space reduction values for each style are stored in the same chip as the width values. A rotary disc is used as a character matrix. The disc has characters in a plurality of concentric rows. This disc preferably is segmented, with one complete font of characters on each segment. A relatively simple arrangement is provided for changing from one row of characters to the next.

Horizontal plates are affixed to the radially extending support members to support the segments against gravity and centrifugal force is employed to precisely seat the segments against the vertically oriented shoulder portions upon rotation of the hub.

    摘要: A headline/display photocomposing machine having a rotatable character matrix disc, a flash lamp, focusing and size-changing optics, and a light-sensitive image-receiving surface. Each matrix character has an associated binary four bit code positioned on the disc representing the width value of the character. The elements or bits of each code are arranged serially (rather than parallel) so that the bits are sensed one after another as they pass a sensing station. The control circuit of the machine recognizes the width codes in terms of their value plus three, in order that a given binary four bit code may represent any standard character width value up to 18 relative units.
