摘要:
In a printer adapted to receive any of a plurality of petal-type printing thimbles, each of the printing thimbles is provided with a recognition code-forming portion containing a plurality of protuberance-forming positions, the arrangement of protuberances at the protuberance-forming positions defining a thimble recognition code which identifies specific character position, hammer impression, and character spacing tables. These tables identify the character positions, hammer impression forces and character spacings required to print characters designated by character codes when the recognition code identified printing thimble is mounted on the printer. A mechanical means, mounted on the printing hammer cover of the printer carrier unit, detects the presence or absence of protuberances at the protuberance-forming positions of the code forming portion on the printing thimble, to generate a binary recognition code received by the printer processor. The mechanical means includes an electrical switch, selectively opened or closed by the presence or absence of protuberances.
摘要:
A character selection mechanism for a typewriter having a single type head with characters arranged in rows and columns thereon, which mechanism comprises, for either row selection and column selection similarly, a series of cams, a series of cam followers, a series of transmitting members, and an output member, as one set. The cams are fixed on a cam shaft which is rotated once in response to depressing of any one key. Each of the cam followers is rotated by each corresponding cam and is shifted, against a biasing force, by each corresponding transmitting member from a first position to a second position in response to depressing of the corresponding key. The cam follower engages the output member at the second position for controlling its operation based on the rotation of the cam shaft. The output member is connected to the type head via a connecting mechanism.

The device of the present invention is an automated version of an attachment for a ball element type typewriter intended to permit rapid automatic or semi-automatic switching among a plurality of ball elements. While the invention has utility in any instance where the need arises for switching rapidly and frequently among a number of ball elements, it is particularly useful in systems as described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,088,217 for utilization of a standard typewriter to type Chinese or Japanese.

Resilient tongues project from a central hub and carry two or more type members. The hub is rotated to a position in which the tongue carrying the desired type member is in a printing position facing a paper supporting platen. The hub is then shifted along the axis of the selected tongue so that the required type member is in a printing position. A drive motor for rotating the hub is connected to the hub by a universal joint to compensate for the shifting of the hub. The universal joint comprises a biased presser member to eliminate lost motion in the rotational direction. A stopper member is provided so that the bending characteristics of the selected tongue are the same no matter which type member is selected. A hammer drives the type member against the paper to print. The resilient tongues are formed of a thermoplastic resin mixed with glass or carbon fibers and the type members may be formed separately from the tongues, fixed thereto and plated with metal. The hub may be formed in two or more sections, with each section carrying some of the resilient tongues. The tongues are bent in such a manner that all of the type members lie in a common plane. The angles between the type members and the tongues are selected in such a manner that all of the type members strike the paper perpendicular to the platen.

A single-element type carrier printing mechanism is provided with an element movable to block tangential deflection of the type carrier at printing impact with the platen, is normally disengaged from frictional contact with the type carrier during rotational positioning of the type carrier. The deflection blocking element includes a blocking arm pivotally mounted for free rotation relative to the type carrier, provided with an abutment adapted to act against a blocking surface formed on the type carrier. The blocking arm is also provided with teeth for detent engagement with a tilt detent device which moves the blocking arm from its normally disengaged position into engagement with the blocking surface to prevent impact deflection.

Impression control mechanism for regulating the impact velocity of a single element type carrier against a platen. The support for the type carrier is driven about a pivot by a cam to effect printing. The cam acts through one end of a control lever which end in turn supports and acts directly on a pin located on and spaced from the type carrier support pivot. The control lever is pivoted at its opposite end to an adjusting lever which is itself pivoted to move the control lever pivot and through its end acting on the pin to shift the type carrier support about its pivot establishing the rest position of the type carrier relative to the platen thereby determining the impact velocity of the type carrier.
