A print wheel is rotatably mounted on a carrier driven by a stepper motor to traverse the print line of a document. The wheel contains two or more arrays of characters with preferred characters most commonly used in each array and a number of lesser-used characters divided between the arrays. The print wheel normally makes one revolution for each two or more print positions and if a compare is made in each array the stepper motor advances the carrier at constant speed. Should a compare not be found or the character desired be too close to a previous character for the print hammer to settle out, the stepper motor is stopped for that position until a compare is made in some following array.

A series of laterally spaced brackets are secured together by a printed circuit board on which is mounted a parallel array of Lshaped wires having their short legs molded in a plastic block and their long legs disposed in slots in a plastic guide member. Plastic keys are pivoted at one end to a bar supported by the brackets, and have plugs at an intermediate position which are guided into predetermined slots in the guide member when the keys are depressed. Key circuits are molded into each key and, upon contact of the plug with the long leg of an L-shaped wire in the selected slot, connect two binary bit wires constituting the binary code of the depressed key to a binary code terminal strip.

This invention relates to an electronic embossing machine of the type which has a keyboard controlled die head bearing embossing dies. The die head is rotatably displaceable for placement into the embossing position in accordance with which character is to be embossed. Control means is provided so that the rotational displacement represents the shortest distance between the die last actuated and the die selected to be actuated next. The die head is lockable at the selected die position by means of a brake device and a pawl. Detection means are associated with the die head to determine its angular position, under whose effect one of two circuits is closed depending upon the direction of rotation the die head is to take for the shortest distance, in the case where the die which is selected through the keyboard control does not correspond to the die to be located next in the embossing position.
