    摘要: A new nonlinear organic optical material having a high Second Harmonic Generation capability and a method of manufacturing the same is disclosed. Energy-beam sensitive monomer molecules having large molecular dipole-moments are sandwiched between two facing orientation films formed on respective substrates, and the energy-beam sensitive parts in said molecules are polymerized by irradiation with an energy-beam such as an X-ray beam after the dipole-moments of the energy-beam sensitive monomer molecules are aligned by applying a magnetic or an electric field. As a result of this, no cancellation of dipole-moments takes place, and polymers having extremely high dipole-moments and high Second Harmonic Generation efficiency can be derived and manufactured.

    摘要: A new nonlinear organic optical material having a high Second Harmonic Generation capability and a method of manufacturing the same is disclosed.     摘要: Disclosed are smetic liquid crystal compounds exhibiting ferroelectric behavior and having the formulaR.sup.1 --OR.sup.2).sub.a O--R.sup.3).sub.b Z--R*wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl or alkoxyalkyl, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each alkylene, a is an integer of at least one, b is zero or one, R* is an optically active group containing an asymmetric center and --Z-- is an organic divalent core radical having parallel or coaxially extending bonds at the terminal ends thereof, the core radical having an axial ratio of at least two and being characterized by an essentially rigid and flat molecular structure. Presence of the ether-interrupted hydrocarbon tail moiety at the terminal end of the compounds provides a lowering in observed temperatures of phase transition.

    摘要: Bistable deflection of a beam of light into and out from a layer of nematic liquid crystalline material having negative dielectric anisotropy and having a thickness of from about 1 micron to about 6 microns is achieved by providing the nematic liquid crystalline material in the parallel variable grating mode between two electrodes, the nematic being under an applied voltage between the two electrodes at a voltage level above the threshold voltage level for parallel variable diffraction mode for said nematic liquid crystalline material, and increasing and decreasing the applied voltage so that light diffracted by the parallel variable grating mode nematic is deflected at an angle which either exceeds or is less than the critical angle between the layer of nematic liquid crystalline material and one of the electrodes. When the deflection of diffracted light is increased in excess of the critical angle, the incident light is totally reflected within the nematic layer; and, when the deflection angle of the diffracted light is decreased below the critical angle, the incident light is diffracted through the nematic layer and the one electrode. The bistable deflection can be utilized in a reproduction device which converts a data chain of electrical signals into an image and in integrated optics.

The use of these mixtures and the system containing the above mentioned mixtures for colorimetric detection of temperature differentiation on the surface of biological objects in a narrow range of temperatures.

    摘要: Asymmetric trans-4,4'-dialkyl-ONN-azoxybenzenes having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are straight-chain alkyl groups having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and R.sub.1 .noteq.R.sub.2 are provided. The azoxybenzene compounds are prepared by condensing corresponding P-alkylaniline ##STR2## and P-alkylnitrobenzene ##STR3## placing the reaction mixture into ammonium chloride and hydrolyzing to yield the asymmetrical azoxybenzene compound, corresponding asymmetrical azobenzene compound and asymmetric azobenzene compound. The asymmetric azoxy compound is then separated from the mixture by column chromotography and recrystallization. The asymmetric azoxybenzene compounds have a wide range of nematic liquid crystal temperature and are particularly well suited for liquid crystal compositions for use in matrix-addressing driving systems.

    摘要: When azo type and/or azoxy type compounds having specific structures are incorporated into a nematic liquid crystal material, a liquid crystal composition having positive dielectric anisotropy and a broad mesomorphic range extending above and below room temperature can be obtained. An electro-optical device in which a thin layer of this liquid crystal composition is filled and supported between two substrates can be used for light modulation and display.
