摘要:
A process for the production of paper and paperboard is disclosed wherein water-insensitive starch fibers, produced by extrusion of a starch dispersion into a coagulating solution, are employed to replace all or part of the cellulosic or other pulp conventionally employed. There is also disclosed a method for the incorporation of functional additives into paper during the production thereof; and a method for binding fibers in non-woven webs.

The invention provides a fibrous binder capable of exhibiting a bonding ability in a dry condition for fibers having no self-adhesiveness in paper making but capable of imparting the paper made by use of the same with disintegrability into discrete fibers in a wet condition so that the paper is disposable in water. The fibrous binder is prepared by wet-spinning of an aqueous dope containing a water-soluble salt, e.g. sodium salt, of alginic acid and an alkyleneglycol ester of alginic acid in a specified proportion into a coagulation bath containing a water-soluble salt of certain metals, e.g. calcium, of which the ions are replaceable with the sodium ions of the water-soluble salt of alginic acid to convert the acid into a water-insoluble salt so as to form a water-insoluble gel in a fibrous form of a blend composed of the water-insoluble metal salt of alginic acid and the alkyleneglycol ester of alginic acid.

A non-woven alginate fabric useful as a wound dressing is made by spreading a tow of calcium alginate filaments in a flow of water, overfeeding the spread filaments onto a water-pervious support so that the filaments cross over each other and drying the filaments so that the alginate filaments become bonded to each other at their points of contact where they cross over each other. The filaments used have preferably been stretched in an atmosphere of steam and water-washed but not dried and are preferably dried by suction on the water-pervious support.

The invention provides a novel method for making paper of regenerated chious fibers without the use of any binder materials. By virtue of the inherent physiological inertness of the chitinous fibers and the absence of any binder materials, the paper obtained by the inventive method is advantageously used in medical treatment in contact with living body tissues. The principle of the method is that the chitinous fibers prepared by a wet spinning process are never brought into a dry condition or always kept wet with water down to the step of sheet making so that the self-bonding power of the fibers by the hydrogen bonding is never decreased and a chitinous paper with sufficient strengths can be prepared without a binder material. Alternatively, once dried chitinous fibers can be treated with a hydrogen-bond forming agent, e.g. urea, so that the sheet making is equally successful without the use of a binder material.

A process is provided for manufacturing a smokeable material including a basic material consisting of calcium alginate in fibrous form into which filler material is incorporated. The calcium alginate fibers are formed from the admixture of two solutions, the filler material being suspended in at least one of the solutions in such quantity and the solutions being so mixed that the filler is incorporated integrally in the fibres as they are formed so as to constitute more than 10% of the fibres by weight.

Starch fibrids useful in enhancing the physical properties of non-woven webs, e.g., paper, are produced by a process which comprises providing an aqueous, alkaline solution of a water-insoluble starch in a finely divided form, e.g., in the form of an aerosol, and introducing the finely divided starch solution into an agitated, aqueous precipitating medium comprising a precipitating salt to thereby produce starch fibrids characterized by having both film and fiber morphology. The starch fibrids are recovered from the salt-containing liquid and may be incorporated into paper to improve the physical properties thereof.

A method of manufacturing calcium alginate sheets, without the use of an adhesive binder, by use of a Fourdrinier paper making machine is disclosed. Alginate material in fibrous form is obtained by squirting an aqueous solution of water-soluble alginate via a spinneret into a bath of an inorganic salt, whose cation will react with the alginate to produce a water-insoluble alginate. This fibrous alginate material is then fed into a Fourdrinier machine and formed into a sheet, and the pH value of the fibrous alginate slurry at the screen wire of the machine is at or below 7.0.

A specific paper, which is soluble in and easily destroyable with water, is obtained by subjecting to papermaking a suspension of fibers of pullulan, which is a linear high polymer having repetition units, bonded through .alpha.-1,6-linkages, of maltotriose, a trimer of glucose, and has a structure represented by the formula, ##SPC1##Wherein n is an integer of 20 to 10,000 which represents the polymerization degree, or, if necessary, a suspension of said pullulan fibers in admixture with vegetable fibers such as wood fibers, flax or ramie fibers.
