The invention relates to a mechanism for the simultaneous adjustment of gaps and/or angles for the production of a multi-level or stair structure. The mechanism is characterised in that it comprises a technical housing containing a gap-indicating rule which is provided with parallel inclined grooves and which moves diagonally on fixed transverse shafts. Said diagonal translational movement, performed by a forward-backward control element, causes the sliding of upper shafts and lower shafts that are interconnected by a series of V-shaped arms. The upper shafts slide in a gap-indicating slide and the lower shafts slide in the slide of the technical housing. The lower shafts are solidly connected to the pendulums bearing the plates, allowing the simultaneous adjustment of the gaps between the plates. The technical housing also contains an angle-indicating rule which is provided with parallel inclined grooves and which moves diagonally on fixed transverse shafts, said diagonal translational movement causing the simultaneous movement of sliders in the angle-indicating slide. The aforementioned sliders also pivot the pendulums via a slide-element located at the front end of the pendulums. The technical housings are secured to the wall or the side support by a mortise-and-tenon system on securing supports. According to the invention, the device is intended in particular for the production of a generally straight staircase or staircase formwork.

A tool for use when laying out lines on stair stringers or roof rafters along which cuts are to be made. The step and rafter tool includes a framing square, an angle bracket and two carriage bolts with washers and wingnuts. Each leg of the framing square has a longitudinal slot which is about 90% of the length of the leg. The angle bracket has two central longitudinal slots in the first flange, each of which is about 40% of the length of the angle bracket. The angle bracket is positioned against the framing square so that two carriage bolts are place within holes formed by the overlapping slots of the bracket and square with washers and wingnuts assembled therein. With the wingnuts loose, the angle bracket can be positioned wherever is desired with respect to the framing square and then the wingnuts are tightened. The second flange of the angle bracket now provides a shoe which can slide on the narrow side of a board to be marked and cut for use as a stair stringer or a roof rafter, and thereby stabilize the framing square in place to act as a marking guide. Various indicia, guide marks and data tables are engraved into the legs of the framing square to aid in set up and marking. The edges of the slots in the framing square also provide useful marking guides which are a known distance from other outer or inner edges of the framing square legs.

A template guide which performs and simplifies the task of layout for stair stringers. This accomplishment has previously been made by the use of multiple tools including the framing square, multipurpose square, and speed square as well as others. The said template of the present invention features an adjustable riser that can be secured for the exact dimension of any rise calculated to be between 6″ and 7¾″. The said template of the present invention also features an adjustable tread that can be secured for the exact dimension of any tread length, calculated to be between 9¼″ and 11⅛″. The said template is configured as such to accommodate the unskilled craftsman as well as the experienced tradesman.

A baluster driver tool for rotating a baluster to threadably secure it to a support. The driver tool includes a housing having a connector at one end for connecting it to a drill and a baluster-engaging member at the opposite end for receiving the baluster. The baluster-engaging member includes a cavity that is complementary sized and shaped to receive an end of the baluster. When the drill is activated, the housing rotates about its longitudinal axis causing the baluster to rotate in unison with the housing and securing a threaded end of the baluster into the support. In a second embodiment, a smooth tapered end of a baluster is received within a threaded tapered cavity in the housing. The threads secure the smooth tapered end of the baluster within the cavity so that rotation of the housing causes the baluster to rotate in unison therewith and securing the threaded end of the baluster to the support.

The present invention is directed to a tool for troweling masonry steps which employs a convenient arrangement for swiftly positioning the trowel blade with a slight and easily repeatable consistent slope. To ensure uniformity, the present invention has an adjustable member which rides along the form of the step immediately above the one being trowled allowing an easily reproducible slope. In a preferred embodiment, a calibrated bubble level is included in the handle of the trowel which permits the stair finisher an indication of the angle of the slope he is producing.

A variable tread and rise router template for cutting mortises in stair stringers to receive stair treads and risers which is generally triangular in shape having truncated corners and planar in configuration and a tread slot and a riser slot joining the tread slot at a right angle. The template body cuts complementary stringers, routing a first stringer, flipping the generally planar body from one working surface to its opposite working surface, and routing the other stringer. The template body has registration points slidably mounted within the template body to extend downward from the planar body when working from either working surface and a clamp assembly, each positioned to correspond with a corner portion of the template body. The registration assemblies are adjustable to determine tread and riser. The clamp assembly may be released and tightened at another desired stringer position to make the next mortise.
