Abstract: The invention provides a shuttle kiln that can fire ceramic porous bodies containing organic binders in a shorter period of time than in conventional methods without occurring breaks due to a temperature difference between the inside and the outside. The shuttle kiln of the invention is suited for firing of ceramic porous bodies containing organic binders. It includes a gas suction path 4 that suctions in-furnace gas and discharges it via an afterburner 5 and a circulation path 7 that suctions the in-furnace gas to the furnace outside to burn organic binder gas and then returns it into the furnace.

Abstract: A kiln of the pottery or glass type and of insulating firebrick or ceramic fiber with an interior wall includes: a ceramic holder for holding a wound electrical heating element; a channel in the interior wall for receiving and supporting the ceramic holder. The ceramic holder is removably positionable within the slot with means for receipt and holding the wound electrical heating element when the ceramic holder is positioned within the channel in a first preferred embodiment, the ceramic holder has a supporting surface for receipt of the heating element and an inner, upper lip for holding the heating element on the ceramic holder. The interior wall has a horizontal retaining slot aligned with the ceramic holder supporting surface, the supporting surface has an outer end received within the retaining slot and an inwardly angled bore and a pin passing through the bore into the interior wall for holding the ceramic holder removably in place. In an alternate embodiment, the channel has an upper outwardly projecting corner and a lower vertical slot, the ceramic element holder has a vertical outer wall integral with the supporting surface with an upper end for positioning and pivoting within the upper corner and an outer lower lip for positioning within the lower vertical slot when the ceramic element holder is positioned in place.

Abstract: A kiln and method of firing a kiln are provided for use in connection with the firing of small-scale pottery firing. The kiln includes a kiln wall that defines a main kiln volume that is no larger than 60 cubic feet and is less than 10 cubic feet in one embodiment. The main kiln volume is structured to receive a pottery item for firing. The kiln further includes a combustion chamber that is thermally connected to the main kiln volume. A feeder automatically feeds solid fuel to the combustion chamber to reach and maintain at least a cone 10 temperature within the main kiln volume. In use, solid fuel is automatically provided to a combustion chamber at a controlled rate and is combined with combustion air in the combustion chamber. The solid fuel is combusted in the combustion chamber to warm a thermally-connected main kiln volume.
