Abstract:
A modular underdrain system is disclosed. The modular underdrain system may comprise an intermediate modular component having a first peripheral side including a first mating portion and a second peripheral side including a second mating portion. The first peripheral side may comprise at least one transfer orifice. An intermediate plate member is disposed intermediate the first peripheral side and the second peripheral side along a width dimension. The intermediate plate member may comprise a metering pipe opening. A metering pipe may be sized to be positioned within the metering pipe opening.
Abstract:
An underdrain block for filtering water includes a top wall, a bottom wall, and two side walls connecting the top wall to the bottom wall to define an internal chamber. The bottom wall contains a plurality of orifices that allow liquid and solid materials to enter and exit the internal chamber. An underdrain filtering system can be formed by securing an underdrain lateral, which is formed from one or a plurality of underdrain blocks, to a filter floor. Also included is a method of preparing an underdrain lateral for providing even distribution of backwash water along the underdrain lateral and a method of validating even distribution of backwash water across an underdrain lateral.
Abstract:
A water storage and filtering system for capturing pollutants from pollution borne storm water. The water storage and filtering system comprises a subsurface basin, at least one tire bundle made from a plurality of substantially whole tires secured sidewall to sidewall, and a filler which substantially fills the unoccupied volume of the subsurface basin. Pollutants in the storm water are captured as sediment in the subsurface basin as a result of the filtration and storage effects of the combination of the filler and tire bundles. The subsurface basin is covered by a water-permeable structure and multiple hollow vertical support columns may be included to support the expected load on the top of the basin.
Abstract:
An underdrain filter block for use in draining and backwashing a filtering media in a filter bed including a top wall, a pair of side walls extending from the top wall, a bottom wall extending between the pair of side walls, and a transverse wall extending from one of the pair of side walls to the other of the pair of side walls. The top wall, the pair of side walls, and the bottom wall define an upper portion and a lower portion. The lower portion includes a grout chamber positioned between the bottom wall and the transverse wall and at least one of the bottom wall and said side walls contains an opening.
Abstract:
An underdrain filter block includes a top wall, a pair of side walls extending from the top wall, a bottom wall extending between the pair of side walls, first and second ribs, and a wall segment extending between the first rib and the second rib to define a grout chamber configured to receive grout during installation of the underdrain filter block.
Abstract:
An apparatus for use in a filter system for filtering water or wastewater. The apparatus preferably includes at least one underdrain lateral having at least an inner chamber, a first outer chamber and a second outer chamber. The first outer chamber and the second outer chamber are preferably in fluid communication with the inner chamber. The inner chamber, the first outer chamber and the second outer chamber are preferably formed by an inner liner and an outer liner. The outer liner is a separate piece from the inner liner and surrounds the inner liner. The inner chamber is preferably configured to simultaneously receive a liquid and a gas during a washing procedure including simultaneous use of a liquid and gas to clean a filter bed to create a liquid and gas interface in the inner chamber.
Abstract:
An apparatus for removing impurities from water and/or wastewater and a method of installing a fluid distribution system in the apparatus. In the most preferred form of the invention, the fluid distribution system is an air scour system for directing air through the filter bed to assist in cleaning of the filter bed to remove impurities trapped in the filter bed during a service run. In the most preferred form, the method of installing the fluid distribution system in the filter bed is performed by imparting a force to the filter bed to permit the fluid distribution system to be installed in the filter bed without removing media. The fluid distribution system is preferably configured to permit the fluid distribution system to be readily installed in the filter bed and at an optimum orientation.
Abstract:
A filter system for filtering particles from a liquid includes an underdrain assembly having an underdrain defining at least one underdrain chamber and a media retainer assembly. The media retainer assembly includes an upper filter media retainer plate defining a plurality of hopper-shaped cavities and a lower filter media retainer plate defining a plurality of hopper-shaped cavities corresponding to the plurality of hopper-shaped cavities on the upper plate. The plates are in a nested arrangement such that the hopper-shaped cavities on the upper plate are in alignment with the corresponding plurality of hopper-shaped cavities on the lower plate to define a plurality of passages therebetween and allow for the passage of the liquid while preventing the passage of a filter media. During a backwash operation, the upper and lower plates are relatively moveable such that the backwash fluid releases any particles lodged in the passages between the plates.

Abstract:
A portable water treatment device comprising an outer shell having a substantially flat bottom and a plastic inner liner, wherein the outer shell and the plastic inner liner together define an internal chamber having a first end for influent of a water source and a second end for effluent of treated water. The device also comprises a porous underdrain positioned near the bottom of the internal chamber; a filter bed comprising sand, and a Schmutzdecke formed within the flexible shell on or within the filter bed opposite the porous underdrain. Other embodiments include water treatment methods.
