A roof support suitable for use in mines comprises a main roof-supporting structure, a cantilever carried by the structure, an actuator and a link member through the intermediary of which the actuator is connected to one end portion of the cantilever for moving the cantilever between retracted and extended positions. The end portion of the cantilever has projections which come into engagement with an abutment when, upon advancing movement of the actuator, the cantilever reaches its fully extended position. The abutment and projections are so shaped that when they are in engagement they form pivot means about which the cantilever can be tilted. The link member is so formed and so connected to the cantilever that upon further advancing movement of the actuator the cantilever is caused to tilt about the pivot means into a roof-supporting position.

A hydraulic circuit for longwall support for use in underground mining for supporting a longwall by means of a plurality of support shields comprises in the annular piston line of each cylinder/piston unit a pressure sensor. Said pressure sensor upon reaching a predetermined maximum pressure activates a pressure deviation signal, which causes the entire longwall to be depressurized by means of a longwall shut-off valve. The pressure deviation signal is blocked for one of the hydraulic valves against each triggering signal.

A roof engaging structure for a mine roof support comprises at least two relatively movable roof engaging members 21 and 23, which are coupled together by at least two spaced-apart pivotal joints 25 and 26. The pivotal joints combine to influence the relationship of the roof engaging surfaces of the two members. In one embodiment for example, the roof engaging surfaces of the two roof engaging members may adopt either an angular or a parallel relationship with respect to one another, one surface lying at least partially below the adjacent surface. The arrangement enables the roof engaging structure to shape itself to various forms of mine roof, while preventing jack knifing of the forward end of the roof engaging structure.

The sprag plate 21 is included in a sprag unit 20 that can be reciprocated in the fore-and-aft direction of the canopy and the sprag unit 20 includes a sprag slide 22 and a link system 43 and 61 that can be reciprocated in the fore-and-aft sense relatively to each other. There is a range of lost motion between the slide 22 and the link system and the means 48 for moving the sprag unit between the position in which the sprag plate 21 is operative and the position in which the sprag plate 21 is inoperative also moves the sprag slide and the link system relatively to each other through their range of lost motion and this relative movement swings the sprag plate 21 between a generally upright, operative, position and a generally horizontal, retracted, position.

This invention concerns a telescopic support cap, e.g. for mining, comprising a main beam element having a support end and an extensible end; a bar slidable relative to, and having one end slidingly connected to, the main element, the other, free end projecting beyond said extensible end; a crank connected at one end by a transverse pivot fixed on the main element at a short distance from the said support end, the other, free end of the crank being shaped for bearing on a timber prop, without other connection; and a hydraulic jack pivoted to the bar and to the crank intermediate the pivotal axis of the latter and its free end, such that the cap is buttressed on actuating the jack by the said free end and by the main element and the crank.
