An axial/radial three-channel diffuser is provided with two guide vanes for dividing the diffuser into three partial diffusers that are distributed so that the distribution of the surface area over the three partial diffusers in the inlet surface area is uneven. The guide vanes are oriented in accordance with the total pressure field after the last rotating blade row and are arranged at a minimum distance from the trailing edge of the last rotating blade row. Because of its long extension in relation to the channel heights of the partial diffusers, the three-channel diffuser brings about a gentle deflection of the diffuser flow. The diffuser according to the invention results in an improved pressure recovery and increased turbine performance.

There is provided an axial-flow turbine comprising an exhaust chamber; a turbine including multiple stage rotor blades, said multiple stage rotor blade including terminal stage rotor blades; an annular diffuser located between the turbine and the exhaust chamber; and an annular axial-flow turbine passage defined by the turbine, the diffuser and the exhaust chamber, wherein fluid flows through the axial-flow turbine passage toward the exhaust chamber, and an annular stepped portion which inwardly projects in a radial direction is formed on the portion of an inner wall of the axial-flow turbine passage that is located on the downstream side of a trailing edge of a tip portion of the terminal stage rotor blades provided in the flow direction of the fluid. A flow by-pass system is provided in a downward-discharging exhaust hood of a steam turbine to by-pass a small percentage of the total steam flow from the top portion of the exhaust hood to the vicinity of the condenser and in that way relieve excess pressure in the top portion incident to the more convoluted path of the main portion of steam passing from the top to the bottom and to decrease energy loss caused by friction and thus to improve turbine efficiency. The flow by-pass system includes by-pass conduits within the front portion of the exhaust hood extending from the top portion to the vicinity of the condenser. Such conduits are formed by covering over the corners between the outer and end walls of the exhaust hood and between the exhaust hood end wall and the bearing cone outside surface with by-pass walls to form flow passages in the corners behind the by-pass walls through which exhaust steam may pass from the region of higher pressure in the top portion of the exhaust hood to the region of lower pressure in vicinity of the condenser. Inlets and outlets are provided in the by-pass walls for entrance and exit of the turbine exhaust steam to the by-pass conduits.
