The stop portion defines the minimum length to which the slip shaft drive assembly may be collapsed and thereby eliminates the possibility of the plug being dislodged during shipping and/or handling.

A telescopic tripot universal joint comprises an outer drive member having three longitudinal drive channels which include two opposing concave side surfaces having a parabolic profile, an inner drive member having three radial trunnions having a radially outward facing semi-spherical surface for tiltably mounting a drive ball assembly which has a bearing train disposed radially between an inner ball tiltably engaged to the trunnion and an outer ball having a tread face which directly opposes the concave side surfaces of the drive channels. The parabolic side surface has a radially outward portion having a smaller radius of curvature than a radial inward portion of the parabolic side surface. Moreover, the radius of the inward portion is equal to or greater than the maximum radius of the outer ball thereby assuring the tread face of the outer ball does not bind against the inward portion of the parabolic side surface on the unloaded side. This reduces universal joint studder as a result of ball assembly tilting about a Y-axis extending longitudinally with respect to the outer drive member.

The invention relates to mechanical engineering, more particularly, cardan shaft joints and can be used in transmissions of various vehicles. The task of the invention is to create a cardan shaft joint possessing a high durability, necessary and prescribed reliability and contact strength, with a reduction of its cost at the same time. For the task to be fulfilled, the cardan shaft joint is comprised of a cross with a needle bearing mounted on each and every pin thereof, the cross, outer ring and the needle rollers of the needle bearing being made of a structural carbon steel having a lower hardenability, and along with this, a carbon content in the structural steel selected for manufacturing the cross and outer ring of the needle bearing is the same while the carbon content in the structural steel selected for manufacturing the needle rollers is 1.21-1.33 of the carbon contained in the structural steel selected for making the cross and outer ring of the needle bearing. Also, the microstructure of the surface layer of cross pins, the entire volume of the outer ring and needle rollers of the needle bearing represents a martensite tempered with the size of the effective austenitic grain being from 0.0027 to 0.0069 mm. Moreover, the microstructure of the surface layer of the outer ring of the needle bearing is a martensite tempered with the size of the effective austenitic grain being from 0.0027 to 0.0069 mm while the microstructure of the core of the needle bearing outer ring is an acicular troostite having a hardness ranging from 44 to 47 HRC, and the microstruoture of the core of pins and the cross body is troostite, troostosorbite or sorbite and, more importantly, the surface hardness of the needle rollers of the needle bearing exceeds the hardness of the cross pins surface and that of the outer ring of the needle bearing 2-3 HRC.

Another object is to provide an outer race for constant velocity joints that does not place an excessive load on the mold used and a method of manufacturing the outer race. The present exemplary process employs a blank that is obtained by a forging method and that therefore is isotropic in the circumferential direction. Additionally, the blank is formed into an outer race using forward extrusion.

A universal joint includes a cross member having a plurality of trunnions extending outwardly therefrom. A hollow bearing cup is disposed about the end of each of the trunnions. Each of the bearing cups has an open end, a closed end, and an inner surface that is disposed about a bearing surface formed on the trunnion. An insert is disposed between the bearing surface of the trunnion and the inner surface of the bearing cup provided thereon. In a first embodiment, an annular groove is formed in the inner surface of the bearing cup that receives the insert therein. In a second embodiment, the insert is disposed between the cylindrical bearing surface of the trunnion and the cylindrical inner surface of the bearing cup. The insert is formed from either a ceramic material or a composite material. The bearing cup may be formed from a metallic material that is molded about the insert.
