    摘要: An apparatus and method that determines a maximum road friction coefficient for each wheel regardless of whether the tire is in a predetermined drive slip state, and whether the wheel is a driving wheel. The braking force of each wheel is calculated, and the longitudinal force of the tire of each wheel is calculated. Then, the driving force of the vehicle is calculated, and the lateral force of the tire of each wheel is calculated. Next, the reaction force of the road to each wheel is calculated, and the vertical load of each wheel is calculated. Finally, the ratio of variation in reaction force of the road to variation in composite slip ratio is calculated for each wheel. The sum of the ratio of the reaction force of the road to the vertical load, and the product of a predetermined coefficient and the ratio of variation in reaction force of the road to variation in composite slip ratios is calculated for each wheel as the maximum road friction coefficient.

A force measuring means is provided to measure the resulting traction or friction force.     摘要: Wear of a rubbing member of a triction couple, such as an iron brake disc (15), which is subject to slow wear by frictional engagement by brake pads (17), is determined by attaching a carrier member (25) of wear determining arrangement (24) to the rubbing surface of the disc by electromagnet (28) and causing a transducer (33), such as magnetic displacement sensor having probe (33/2), to s an across the surface along a track (48). After an initial scan to map the surface the carrier is removed and re-attached after a period of brake usage, whereupon the surface is scanned again and wear assessed. The carrier is provided with feet (26/1) and biassed by a resilient electromagnet mount against the surface. If the surface to which the carrier is attached is subject to wear a re-attached carrier is unable to provide a reference for the transducer signals and an alignment template (46) is used to provide both location recesses for re-locating the carrier to scan along the track and datum recesses (52/1), through which the transducer probe is scanned, having flat floor regions (62) that are no subject to wear and define a datum plane (88) relative to which all transducer signals can be referred. To facilitate ease of use, the location recesses by removal of the alignment template and the template may be coupled to the carrier member for attachment to the surface together before the template is removed.

The slide supports a stationary upper specimen, which engages a moveable lower specimen, located in a replaceable module attachable to a base plate of the frame. The modules may be of a rotary, reciprocating, a block-on-ring, or any other type, required for different test conditions. Testing can also be carried out with heating or with the supply of oil in the zone of contact between the specimens.

    摘要: A bench testing system creates a predetermined wear and friction environment wherein wear elements, illustratively a piston ring and a cylinder liner, can be tested, along with lubricant properties, under simulated conditions of an internal combustion engine. The effects of speed and normal load can be examined under multiple lubrication regimes, and variations in the coefficient of friction can be observed as a function of crank angle degree. Profilocorder techniques are used to examine photomicroscopic surface characteristics. The cylinder wall wear element is supported in a first support arrangement that is driven reciprocatingly along a substantially axial path. A dynamic counter-reciprocating arrangement is coupled thereto for controlling second harmonic inertial forces. A second support arrangement that supports the piston ring wear element is coupled to a linear drive that urges same in a direction transverse to the substantially axial path of reciprocation of the cylinder wall wear element. A force gauge coupled to the linear drive produces data corresponding to the force being applied thereby. A further force gauge measures the friction force. Rotational data is obtained from a rotational encoder, and a lubricant supply arrangement provides lubrication in accordance with a plurality of lubrication regimes.
