A camera is provided with an SPD and a PSD suitable for implementing a camera capable of enhancing an accuracy of focusing and/or reducing a cost with a small scale of circuit. In the event that a photography is performed at a relatively short distance, a switch is switched by an MPU to offer a low impedance state. An AF-dedicated photo detector circuit determines a distance I1 and I2 obtained through a pair of signal electrodes of the PSD. On the other hand, in case of a relatively long distance, the MPU switches the switch to offer a high impedance state in accordance with distance data representative of the determined distance, so that an AF-dedicated photo detector circuit determines a distance up to the camera subject in accordance with photo-current I3 obtained from one of the signal electrodes of the PSD. In this manner, in the event that a photography is performed at a relatively long distance, there is performed a processing of determining a distance up to the subject in accordance with a total quantity of light.

The present focusing method is used in a focus detecting apparatus comprising an objective lens, means for entering a luminous flux for focus detection into a target object from a position inconsistent with an optical axis of the objective lens through at least the objective lens, a condenser lens for converging the luminous flux after it is reflected by the target object and again passes through the objective lens, two two-division sensors disposed with the same optical inclination in front of and behind a position where the reflected luminous flux is converged by the condenser lens when a focus of the objective lens is adjusted to the surface of the target object, and a signal processing circuit for performing operational processing of signals from the two two-division sensors. The focus detecting apparatus detects whether the focus of the objective lens is adjusted to the surface of the target object. When focusing is performed with this apparatus, the target object is moved while the focus position is followed after the detection of the focus position, focus detection is performed many times and the detected signal values are averaged, and the resultant average value is used to drive the objective lens. This series of operations is repeated, and then the focus position is fixed.

A spatial modulator, a luminous flux deflector, a focus detection apparatus and a imaging device, which are capable of changing the focal position. The focus detection device includes: a focus sensor; liquid crystal cells that are arranged between a lens and the focus sensor and deflect luminous flux guided from the lens to the focus sensor while enabling a deflection characteristic of the luminous flux guided from the lens to the focus sensor to be changed; and a microcomputer for controlling the liquid crystal cells according to the size, position and so on upon an exit pupil of the lens and changing the deflection characteristic of the luminous flux guided from the lens to the focus sensor.
