摘要: A display device (10) is comprised of a display unit (14) and a high efficiency backlight assembly (28). The backlight assembly (28) is comprised of an inductively coupled electrodless fluorescent lamp (12) for providing light to the display unit (14). The display unit (14) includes a liquid crystal display (LCD) element (16) for displaying an image and a diffuser (22) for using the light generated by the backlight unit (28) to create a relatively uniform level of brightness over the entire area of the LCD element (16). The electrodless lamp (12) is preferably mounted in a reflective lamp housing (24) having a reflective lamp lining (36) designed to provide uniform illumination intensity on the LCD element (16). The electrodless lamp (12) may have a rectangular shape and a center reflector (44) mounted within the rectangular opening to further direct light toward the LCD element (16). In a further version of the invention, a backlight unit (66) is comprised of a light guide (68) having remote electrodless lamps optically connected to the ends (70, 84) thereof.

摘要: A class of novel structures which make novel use of polymer based reflective polarizing films in an improved polarization conversion system which are useful in liquid crystal projection systems that are easily manufactured, of lower cost, and permit the versatility of higher numerical aperture polarization conversions. Another aspect of the present invention are polarization modulating liquid crystal projection display systems utilizing the polarization conversion systems of the present invention.

摘要: In a liquid crystal projection display, first, second and third color components of an input light beam are processed by first, second and third polarizers that are disposed respectively perpendicular to propagation directions of the first, second and third color components. First, second and third liquid crystal modulators modulate the first, second and third color components from the polarizers. First, second and third analyzers process the modulated first, second and third color components, respectively, and are disposed perpendicular to the propagation directions of the first, second and third color components. The first, second and third liquid crystal modulators are disposed respectively at an angle relative to a recombiner unit such that an output light beam can be provided by the recombiner unit to a projection lens group with a propagation direction that is parallel to an optical axis of the projection lens group.
