An improved apparatus for deconcentrating an electric field, surrounding a high voltage insulator. A clamp assembly centrally formed within a coronal ring permitting positive placement of the coronal ring about an insulator end fitting. The clamping assembly includes an integral clamp with a U-shaped opening for engaging a cylindrical portion of an insulator end fitting. Two keeper clamps are pivotally mounted superjacent to the integral clamp, each keeper clamp having a smaller U-shaped opening both of which engage a portion of the insulator end fitting and pivot toward each other between an insulator receiving position and an insulator securing position, securing the insulator between the integral clamp and the two keeper clamps. A captive fastener such as a bolt extends upwardly through the clamp and the keeper clamps to secure the keeper clamps in position against the insulator end fitting and the integral clamp to secure the corona ring in position relative the insulator end fitting. The varied sized openings of the integral clamp and keeper clamps prevent inverted installation of the corona ring.

A high voltage insulator has a fiberglass reinforced core surrounded by a polymer weathershed housing with a plurality of fins. Metal fittings are located at both ends of the insulator and are connected to the weathershed housing by shielding collars. A corona protection device of semiconductive elastomeric material is attached or bonded to the exterior of the shielding collar or the metal fitting. The interface between the corona protection device and the shielding collar or metal fitting may include a sealant or other compound.

Insulator terminator device, for attachment to the top or bottom of a high voltage power line insulator having a conventional end fitting, for prevention of high surface leakage currents and corona discharges, and the corrosive and erosion effects produced thereby, so as to lengthen effective life of the insulator. The device, which attaches around the region of the juncture of the insulator and its end fitting, has a disk shaped semiconductor element with rounded edges, and a rounded-edged surface conduction and strength layer element fitting the bottom, sides, and outer portion of the top of the semiconductor disk element. Surface currents and corona discharges are prevented by shunting of current as volume current though the semiconductor disk and its surface conduction layer, directly to the end fitting of the insulator. The rounded geometry of the device also avoids any high field points which might otherwise produce corona discharges on the surface of the device.
