A frequency translator is described that includes a toroid of gyromagnetic material extending along a length of waveguide. The toroid has demagnetizing gaps along its length. RF signals propagating along the waveguide are frequency deviated by the application of sawtooth current coupled through and along the toroid as modulating signals therefor.

A feather-edge conductive pattern is sandwiched between two ferrite bars sos to cause different degrees of residual magnetism in the bars. Two other blocks of materials having relative high dielectric constants sandwich the ends of the bars, and the whole device is inclosed in a waveguide which will have variable phase shifts in accordance to the residual magnetism of the bars.

The insertion phase of a ferrimagnetic phase-shifter is trimmed to a reference value by attaching permanent magnets to the outside of the waveguide to vary the flux linkages through the ferrimagnetic core. In one embodiment, rubber-magnet tape is applied to the outside top of the waveguide both to add flux linkages through the core and to compensate for any stray magnetic fields so as to give the trim the same effect in either direction of propagation along the waveguide. In a second embodiment, two permanent bar magnets are positioned uprightly on the waveguide above each end of the toroid core and a metallic bar is slidably placed across the top of the magnets. The metallic bar may be slid across the tops of the upright magnets varying the surface area contact between the bar and the magnets and thus varying the flux linkages running through the toroid core from the magnets. Varying the flux linkages varies the phase-shift of the toroid core.

A stripline non-reciprocal multi-octave phase shifter which consists of a matched dielectric slab located along the first ferrite slab edge which corresponds to the magnetic wall and of lumped loads placed along the propagation direction along the same edge of the second ferrite slab. The other edge of the slabs are associated with identical composite media terminated by a lump impedance which consists of a short-circuit between the three conductors in the preferred embodiment of the invention. A high permittivity dielectric slab near the other edge of each of the ferrite slabs is preferably part of said composite media.

A latching ferrite phase shifter having a ferrite toroid is provided with inexpensive means for adjusting its magnetization to account for manufacturing inaccuracies and temperature changes. A small permanent magnet is mounted externally of the transmission line in which the ferrite is positioned. The permanent magnet applies parallel fields to the opposite sides of the toroid, selectively reducing magnetic flux density on one side.

An antenna element for use in a phased array antenna is disclosed. Such antenna element is a reciprocal device adapted selectively to radiate radio frequency energy of either circular or linear polarization. Such antenna element includes waveguide means for passing radio frequency energy and for radiating such energy; and means adapted to transform the polarization of the radio frequency energy as such passes through the waveguide means to radiate such radio frequency energy selectively with either linear or circular polarization. In a preferred embodiment the just-mentioned means includes a first and a second nonreciprocal quarter-wave plate having field orientations effectively 45.degree. with respect to each other. Such nonreciprocal quarter-wave plates flank a third nonreciprocal quarter-wave plate switchable so that its field orientation is either aligned with the field orientation of the first nonreciprocal quarter-wave plate or, while still aligned as before, turned 180.degree.. Further, the third quarter-wave plate may be switched into a nonenergized state. A reciprocal quarter-wave plate is disposed between the radiating end of the waveguide means and the second nonreciprocal quarter-wave plate. A phase shifter section is disposed between the third nonreciprocal quarter-wave plate and the first nonreciprocal quarter-wave plate. When the field orientations of the first and the third quarter-wave plate are aligned, vertically polarized radio frequency energy introduced into the waveguide means is changed to radiate as horizontally polarized radio frequency energy. When the field orientation of the third quarter-wave plate is reversed by 180.degree., vertically polarized radio frequency energy introduced into the waveguide means is radiated as vertically polarized radio frequency energy. When the third quarter-wave plate is unenergized, vertically polarized radio frequency energy introduced into the waveguide means is changed to radiate as circularly polarized radio frequency energy. The phase shifter section, whatever the polarization of the radio frequency energy passing through, is operative to change, in accordance with a beam steering control signal, the phase of such energy.

A unidirectional phase shifter provides selectable phase changes for linearly polarized microwaves of electromagnetic radiation entering the phase shifter in one direction and constant insertion phase for linearly polarized microwaves entering the phase shifter in the opposite direction. The phase shifter consists of two ferrite phasor sections arranged such that the phase changes of the two sections add for one direction of signal flow and cancel for the other. Each phasor section includes a ferrite half-wave plate, at one end of which is coupled a ferrite quarter-wave plate, and at the other end of which is coupled a dielectric quarter-wave plate. The dielectric quarter-wave plate of one of the phasor sections is coupled to the ferrite quarter-wave plate of the other phasor section.

A radio frequency phase shifter suitable for X-band operation is disclosed. Such phase shifter incudes a waveguide structure and a ferrite assembly disposed within such waveguide structure. The ferrite assembly has a conductive material plated on the sides thereof. A pair of such plated sides is in contact with the wide walls of the waveguide structure thereby preventing the generation of longitudinal section modes (i.e. LSE.sub.1,1, LSM.sub.1,1, and LSE.sub.1,2) and another pair of such plated walls is displaced from the narrow walls of such waveguide structure to form a pair of waveguide sections cut off to the dominant mode of the radio frequency energy passing through the ferrite phase shifter thereby inhibiting such energy from coupling to wires passing through such waveguide sections for supplying drive current to the enclosed ferrite assembly. Because the waveguide structure may be flexed and has a width greater than the width of the ferrite assembly, the ferrite assembly may be inserted within the waveguide structure, when flexed, to provide the desired contact between the plated sides of the ferrite assembly and the wide walls of the waveguide structure when the latter returns to its original dimensions.
