A bulk material unloader includes parallel, spaced-apart main and back barges or pontoons which are held in fixed relationship with respect to each other by four collar frames. Two parallel cargo lighters are positioned between pontoons and the unloader is moored alongside ship. The two midship collar frames support a two-legged main tower over the main barge and a two-legged back tower over the back barge. A horizontal boom assembly includes a back bridge extending between the towers and an outboard boom supported by the towers and normally extending away from the back bridge and over the ship in parallel, end-to-end alignment with the back bridge. A horizontal bulk material conveyor assembly on the horizontal boom assembly includes two fixed parallel top horizontal endless belt-type conveyors supported on the back bridge and two parallel bottom horizontal endless belt-type conveyors supported on the boom assembly to move back and forth under the top conveyors and situated to receive bulk materials leaving the top conveyors. A chute is mounted at the outboard ends of the bottom conveyors, and bulk material deposited on the bottom conveyors is discharged into the chute for delivery to a hold of the ship. A bucket trolley and a grab bucket run on tracks which extend the entire length of the boom assembly. A hopper is situated on the back barge under the tracks so the bucket can deposit materials from the lighters into the hopper. An elevating conveyor carries materials from the hopper to the top horizontal conveyors. The chute is removable for offloading so the bucket trolley can move out to the outboard end of the outboard boom.

The device includes second tension means connected at one end to the main body and at the other end to the outer boom section for pivotal movement in a vertical plane. A point of connection of the inner boom section to the main boom, a point of connection of the inner boom section to the outer boom section, a point of connection of the second tension means to the main body and a point of connection of the second tension means to the outer boom section are arranged such that imaginary lines connecting these points of connection together substantially form a parallelogram. With the link motion including the four points of connection arranged to form a parallelogram, the vertically pivotable boom can be raised or lowered by the articulating rope by bending same at the junction of the inner boom section and the outer boom section and keeping the outer boom section substantially horizontal at all times.

A crane has an elevation structure foldable at its intermediate portion, a rope extended along the structure and a rope support for supporting the rope. When the structure is folded and elevated, the rope support is moved to and held at a position near the point of folding of the structure. After the completion of straightening of the structure, the rope support is held at a position adjacent to the extreme end of the structure. A rope supporting apparatus for realizing this method includes an arrangement for mounting the rope support for movement along the structure, and a shifting driving mechanism mounted on the rope support and adapted to drive the rope support along the length of the structure.

A crane structure is mounted on a platform and has a tower assembly with spaced apart columns spanned at their upper extremities by an upper structure. A gantry includes a central section, fixedly secured on the upper structure, and first and second outer gantry sections. The outer sections are pivotally connected to the central section, and are movable between horizontal operating positions and generally vertical transport positions. The gantry sections have at least two vertically spaced series of tracks thereon. In the upper tracks a counterweight is mounted on casters or rollers, and a lift trolley is similarly disposed on the lower tracks. A sheave and winch assembly interconnects the counterweight and the lift trolley through a cable arrangement, whereby corresponding movements of the counterweight and the lift trolley are effected through operation of the winch. The lift trolley is adapted to travel substantially the full lengths of the gantry sections when the sections are in operating positions. An operator's cab is mounted on an arm pivotally secured to one of the columns.
