A method of making a thin film explosive detonator includes forming a substrate layer; depositing a metal layer in situ on the substrate layer; and reacting the metal layer to form a primary explosive layer. The method and apparatus formed thereby integrates fabrication of a micro-detonator in a monolithic MEMS structure using “in-situ” production of the explosive material within the apparatus, in sizes with linear dimensions below about 1 mm. The method is applicable to high-volume low-cost manufacturing of MEMS safety-and-arming devices. The apparatus can be initiated either electrically or mechanically at either a single point or multiple points, using energies of less than about 1 mJ.

The invention relates to a fuse for a satellite projectile that is expelled from a carrier projectile. In order to maintain a defined ignition time within narrow tolerances, despite initial blind position of the fuse immediately after the expulsion of the satellite projectile, the firing pin 7 is centrally arranged in the interior of a key-shaped cover 12 which is movably disposed in the interior of a housing 1. The wall 12' of the cover 12 has a plurality of recesses 5' into which there engage a corresponding number of locking pins 5 mounted on sheet metal springs 4. These springs 4 are radially outwardly swingable and are secured to the housing 1. The locking pins 5 prevent an axial movement of the firing pin 7 during the safety inactive-position-period and prevent thereby a radial outward swinging of the detonator support 15 into the ignition position. The lockings pins 5 are capable of being swung outwardly in a radial direction out of the wall of the cover 12 only after the unwinding of a wound band 11, whereby the ignition process can be introduced.

The fuse also contains a delay-composition-containing piston that is movable toward a fixed firing pin in a direction at an angle to the main piston. The delay piston has stopping means preventing its movement as long as the main piston has not reached its outward, fully armed position.

This invention relates to a dual safety time delayed fuze, useful, for example, in conventional grenades, and particularly to a biased barrier between the pyrotechnic delay charge and the fuze ignitor charge. The barrier contains a flash-hole which is normally held out of alignment with the fuze powder train by a barrier latch. Upon ignition of the delayed charge, a heat motor, activated by the burning of the charge, expands against the barrier latch, displacing it, thereby allowing the biasing element to drive the barrier flash-hole into alignment with the delay and the ignitor. The barrier flash-hole may optionally contain a lead charge to insure ignition of the fuze.

A safety fuse is shown incorporated in rocket propelled round of ammunition. Two complementary mechanisms act upon a slider to maintain it in a position wherein a primer charge therein is out of register with a firing pin. When the round of ammunition is discharged from a gun, linear and angular acceleration are effective on a locking ball to overcome the action of a spring and disengage the ball to overcome the action of a spring and disengage the ball from a notch in the slider''s guideway. Angular acceleration of the round causes the ball to roll into a laterally extending position in the slider. After discharge from the gun, centrifugal force disengages two plungers from the slider permitting it to travel laterally bringing the primer charge into register with the firing pin.
