Abstract:
A method for guarding against telephony-based fraud that comprises, at a telephony device, identifying a caller ID of an incoming call or a dialled number of an outgoing call attempt or a number to be dialled. The identified caller ID or dialled number or number to be dialled is then compared against a blacklist of telephone numbers. In the event that a match is found, a warning is presented to a user of the device and/or the call or call attempt is terminated.
Abstract:
A method of generating or entering a password or passphrase on a computer system 1. The method comprises storing a plurality of sets of values in a memory 5 of the system 1, the values of each set defining respective elements which belong to a common domain, the domains of respective sets being distinct from one another, selecting at least one value from each stored set or from each of a plurality of the stored sets, and combining the selected values or elements thereof to form a password or passphrase.
Abstract:
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of protecting a computer system from malware, which malware attempts to prevent detection or analysis when executed in an emulated computer system. The method comprises determining if an executable file should be identified as being legitimate and, if not, executing the executable file whilst providing indications to the executable file that it is being executed within an emulated computer system.
Abstract:
A method of detecting malware present on a computer system, the method comprising, installing a scanning function onto the computer system, and installing and maintaining on the computer system a database identifying vulnerable functions and containing respective malicious values and/or properties, redirecting function calls from a given application to said scanning function, using the scanning function and said database to identify function calls that relate to functions identified as being vulnerable, to identify such function calls that include malicious values and/or properties, and to inhibit such function calls that include malicious values and/or properties.
Abstract:
A method of preventing the infection of a computer network 1 by a computer virus, where that virus can be spread by e-mail traffic. The method comprises installing at an e-mail gateway 7 of the network an anti-virus application 12, which application scans at least incoming e-mail traffic for known viruses. In the event that a new virus is detected by the provider of the anti-virus application 12, a notification of this event is sent from the provider to the anti-virus-application 12. At the anti-virus application 12, receipt of said notification results in the diversion of incoming e-mails or their attachments to a buffer 13 for safe storage.

Abstract:
A method of scanning data for viruses in a computer device, the device having a browser for rendering the data for use. The method comprises storing the data in a buffer memory accessible to said browser and creating an instance of a browser plugin, said plugin providing a virus scanning function or providing a route to a virus scanning function. The data is scanned for viruses using the instance of the plugin and, if no viruses are detected in the data, it is returned to the browser for rendering. If a virus is detected in the data, rendering of the data is inhibited.

Abstract:
A method of preventing an electronic file containing a computer virus from infecting a computer system using the Symbian(TM) operating system, the method comprising the steps of scanning files using an anti-virus application, and if an infected file is identified, maintaining the file in an open non-sharing state, whereby other applications running on the computer system may not operate on an infected file.
