    Abstract: A method of manufacturing large lens arrays from glass includes heating glass to take a form of a glass sheet of viscous liquid glass floating on liquid metal. Large lens arrays are made by the method and devices and systems are used for making the large lens arrays. The glass sheet has a lower surface in contact with the liquid metal and an upper surface on an opposite side of the glass sheet away from the liquid metal. The method applies a gas flow on the upper surface of the glass sheet to cause the upper surface of the glass sheet to form a pattern of convex lenses in response to local variations in a pressure profile of the gas flow; and cooling the glass sheet to solidify into a rigid, patterned glass sheet.

    Abstract: A system for providing a contour map of the surface of a heliostat from reflected sunlight using a fly's eye camera. The system includes an entrance screen configured to receive sunlight reflected by said heliostat; an array of imaging apertures extending across the entrance screen, each aperture forming an image of said heliostat from a different viewpoint to provide a plurality of heliostat images; one or more digital cameras configured to view all of said plurality of heliostat images; an image processor configured to map out from the plurality of heliostat images a location of sunlight delivered to the entrance screen to obtain a plurality of maps, and to provide, based on centroids of said maps a tip and tilt of each said subsection The reflecting surface profile of the heliostat is obtained by integration of the subsection tilts across all the subsections.

    Abstract: A heliostat includes a reflecting surface; an elastically deformable frame on which the reflecting surface is mounted; a truss structure behind the elastically deformable frame that includes at least four bracing struts with first ends attached to the elastically deformable frame and second ends attached to at least one node located centrally behind the frame; at least one actuator connected to at least one of the at least four struts at the at least one node; an electronic control system configured to communicate with the least one actuator; and a dual-axis mount to support and orient the above assembly. The actuation of the at least one actuator in response to the electronic control system causes compression or tension of at least one of the at least four bracing struts to thereby control a shape of the reflecting surface and the elastically deformable frame in at least low order bending modes.
