Abstract: A ripper tool (52) for a tunnel boring machine (TBM) (50) includes a tool body (150) and a plurality of cutting element inserts (155). The tool body (150) has a plurality of socket cavities (157). A tool body blank (240) can be heat treated to increase the hardness of the tool body blank (240). The socket cavities (157) can be machined in the tool body blank (240) after the tool body blank (240) is heat treated. The cutting element inserts (155) are mounted to the tool body (150). The cutting element inserts (155) are respectively press fit in the socket cavities (157). The ripper tool (52) can be pivotably mounted to a cutter head (60) of the TBM (50).
