Abstract: A fabric handling apparatus includes a layup table (20), a mold (22) disposed adjacent to the layup table (20), and a fabric handling array (34) suspended above the layup table (20) and the mold (22). The fabric handling array (34) is adapted to transfer at least one fabric shape (62) from the layup table (20) to the mold (22). The fabric handling array (34) includes a plurality of attractors (36) in an attractor array. An orientation of the fabric handling array (34) is alterable with respect to at least one of the layup table (20) and the mold (22) so that the at least one fabric shape (62) is positionable on the mold (22) in a predetermined orientation.

Abstract: A height adjustment apparatus (10) for an attractor (14) includes a frame (34), a motor (38) disposed on the frame, a spool (42) connected operably to the motor, and a cable (16) connected to the spool. The cable connects to the spool at a first end and to the attractor at a second end. Operation of the motor rotates the spool, thereby taking up or playing out the cable connected to the spool, permitting adjustment of a height of the attractor in at least a vertical direction.

Abstract: A suction cup includes a body (12) with a central axis (78), a first end having an opening, and a second end (16) adapted to be connected to a vacuum source (20), thereby drawing a vacuum through the opening. A lip (34) is provided on the body, which defines a periphery around the opening. An obstruction element (30) with an exterior surface extends across at least part of the opening. The obstruction element defines a plurality of holes (36) therethrough and presents an exterior surface that is substantially flush with the lip. The obstruction element discourages distortion of a fabric drawn to the suction cup, when the vacuum is applied by the vacuum source, to a degree that exceeds a predetermined, acceptable threshold.
