Abstract: This invention relates to optical waveguides that have active optoelectric devices embedded in their core. The optoelectric devices typically emit light and/or detect light and comprise heterostructures formed of 2-dimensional materials. The optically active portions of the 2D heterostructure may comprise 2-dimensional sheets of transition metal dichalcogenides or post-transition metal chalcogenides.
