A display comprises a front-end component having a matrix of neutral light valves that defines the resolution of the display. A backlight unit provides backlighting for the front-end component and has a plurality of individual elements grouped into repeat units, wherein the individual elements in the repeat units differ in color and the repeat units have a resolution less than the display resolution. All individual elements in individual repeat units are capable of simultaneously emitting light incident on more than one neutral light valve.

A display system (1) for generating a picture in accordance with image information (10) derived from a video signal has a light modulation device (20), an illumination device (30) and a control circuit (40) for driving both devices. The algorithm implemented in the control circuit (40) distributes the image information (10) over the light modulation device (20) and the illumination device (30) in order to minimize the power consumption of the display system.

An image compensation apparatus and method is provided. The image compensation apparatus includes a power control module which controls a light emitting unit according to a power control input signal input thereto by a user and provides power reduction information corresponding to the power control input signal, a control parameter generation module which determines a threshold based on the power reduction information, an image compensation module which divides input image information according to the threshold and converts the input image information according to image control information, and an output module which outputs image information obtained by the conversion performed by the image compensation module.

A display apparatus is provided with a display element section (2) for displaying an image in an image display area; a light detection sensor (3) which detects light intensity in the image display area or in the vicinity of the image display area by using a thin film transistor formed on a same insulating board (1) whereupon the display element section (2) is formed; and a light control circuit (5) for controlling luminance of an image displayed by the light detection element section (2) based on the detection results from the light detection sensor (3). Since the light intensity is detected by the light detection sensor (3) using the thin film transistor formed on the same insulating board (1) whereupon the display element section (2) is formed, while enabling excellent image display under various environments, device size increase due to light intensity detection can be eliminated.
